What are you asking. "is that why they were made?" :?
A 1/2 or 3/4 beam can take some abuse offroad but not a ton. Depends how gnarly you're going to get offroad lol
I bent the crap out of a 3/4 ton I beam, its definately possible. I got my truck airborne though.

And when you are talking about offroading are you talking about crawling or go-fast? Crawling, they suck, because i-beams are 2wd, and 2wd sucks for crawling. Simple.

Go-fast, they are great, and used in half the prerunners and offroad-race built trucks you see on the internet and possibly TV.

My 2wd offroad race truck, now with 1 ton I beams.

4wd was made so that the front wheels would turn with power instead of just free wheeling like a twin i beam setup would do. yes you can drive off road with twin i beams. but you wont be able to get traction from the front wheels without actual 4wd.

If you've got a posi or limited slip in the rear differential, then you can putter around in the hills just fine with 2wd. Not as good as having a 4X4, but enough traction to get you in and out of most forest roads that I've ever encountered. that is considering the roads are dry. You get into deep mud or snow and you'd better evaluate the situation and your experience off road before deciding to cross that 200ft long mud puddle or BA snow drift. The key is to know your limitations and be willing to turn around when necessary. Of course this too applies in some instances in a 4X4. :2cents:

Your twin I-Beam will handle stuff like that with ease, (I've had my previous dents with the twin beam in much harsher stuff than that)! But you might want the four wheel drive for traction in that red clay type mud. Run a search for "bumps in movies" here and look for the movie clip from "Mr. Majestic". One of my favorite movies of all time, Charles Bronson launches a twin I-Beam some 15-20 feet into the air landing in a watermelon field in that movie. And I bet the truck actually drove away from that, (unlike the "Dukes" where they would replace the charger after every jump)!
