A few questions about the 9" rear end

Post by mrtleavitt »

Hey guys, got a few questions that I'm hoping you all can help me with. My truck is in storage for the winter so it's not readily available to measure. I've seen several charts with some different info so I'm hoping some of you might have a chance to measure for me. Thanks

1. What is the length (axle to axle) of a 9" rear on the bumps?

2. What is the length of a 9" on the dentside trucks? (I know they are about 4" wider than the bumps but I need an actual measurement)

3. What are the differences between the big bearings and small bearing setups on these axles? Do the smaller bearing axles tend to burn up more or what?

4. On different applications of the 9" are the center sections offset differently or are they all offset the same amount depending on if it was a car or truck 9" rear? (If this is unclear I'm talking about how the pumpkin isn't exactly in the middle of the axle housing when looking at the truck from behind).

I don't remember the axle or wheel mounting surface measurements, but a from 1958 through 1972 the axle measures 57" from flange to flange. 73 thru 90 9"'s measure 58 3/4" flange to flange. IMO the big bearing rearend is stronger, but the small bearing rear is still a very reliable rear for a daily driver that isn't producing serious HP. On the bump era trucks, the right and left axles are the same length in the 9"(29" IIRC). In the dentside era trucks there is more offset and the right and left axles are different lengths.

I'm needing a measurement from the whole length of the rear end (axle to axle). Should be somewhere around 60".

You can go to, " Wayward garage axle widths", site and look it up. 57-72 F-100 outside width is listed as 61.25".

I just went outside to measure the 9" that I took out of my truck and it measures 65.5" from one wheel mounting surface to the next. It was not original to the bump but came out of a early 80s truck. I do remember that, when I did the swap, the original axle was 4" narrower than the one I put in. Hope this helps.
