toploader to 429 install

Post by pritch1958 »

I've been travelling lately so not alot of time to spend on the install. But i have made progress and wanted to send some pics. I had to do some grinding/minor mods to the bell housing around the starter ring, and the lower edge of the clutch fork both to clear the headers, and shaved some off boths sides of the Z bar for the alignment but I got the top loader installed. The picture doesn't show it but the shifter is in a super comfortable spot and will be buttoned down soon. Still a ways to go.

Looking great..nicely done! I'm looking to do the EXACT thing with my truck. Currently getting the 429CJ prepped to go in the shop and could use some tips and tricks you might have learned during your Toploader install...

Yes, this transmission is a manual 4 speed.

Read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Toplo ... ansmission

Toploaders are considered one of Ford's best manual transmissions..."Bulletproof" is a term you'll often hear associated with this transmission.

Good info, thanks. I've heard the term toploader and just thought it referred to any "car" transmission. I'm only familiar with the truck 4 speeds like the NP435, T18, and T19. I didn't realize that toploaders are only 3 and 4 speed transmissions.
