Trans spilling it's guts!

Post by Sparx Macgyver »

OK,I feel a fool, but I got it all back together, and tried starting the truck. Problem. Truck is running, but trans is just pouring out fluid from the dust plate. Is it possibly a quick and easy fix? Kinda broke, and if I can't get it fixed by Monday, it's being towed off.

Trans has to come out to inspect. Maybe front seal popped out?

Oddly enough, I think that may be the issue. I was just hoping it would be something to fix without taking it down. Ah well. Time to take it back off. Thanks Bobby.

OK, part two. While I went and bought a couple of seals, my brother tried starting it to see if it even moved. No reverse, nor drive. I'm thinking bands adjustment. Sound like the right direction?

Too hard to speculate what is wrong. Is this a simple trans swap or did you overhaul it?

Overhauled. I don't recall adjusting the bands, so that is why I went there. Initially, I found out one of my planetary gears was ground down, which the initial thought process was thats why I didn't have any drive gears, only reverse. Just now in the last few days got it installed, only to have the leak. Hopefully, can get that taken care of quickly.

possibly the band adjustment. or it is out of fluid from the leak.

I thought that too, but the amount lost is no where near the amount I put in.

The front (intermediate) band gets tightened to 10 ft. lbs. and then backed off 1 1/2 turns, the rear (low/reverse) band gets tightened to 10 ft. lbs. and then backed off 3 turns...

Ok,just to make sure I fully understand this, it's 1.5 full rotations and then 3. So,if my wrench is at the 12 o'clock position, then it would go once around and stop at 6 o'clock, then 3 full on the back?

Oye. If it's not one thing...

OK,so here goes. Taking things off the trans, so we can take it off, my brother was working on the u-joint, getting the u-bolts out and getting ready to slide it off the back side of the trans. Next thing I hear is a pop/clink. I get under to see what happened, and one part of the u-joint is popped off. Great. Well, I tell him to carefully continue with a couple small pieces (trans cooler lines) while I get my other light out so we can see better. I come out from my storage closet, and he says he put the joint back to gether. All the bearings are back in it. Unfortunatly, I know his skill level, which is less than mine, and that since they were coated in rocks and dirt, I think it needs to just be replaced. Easy? Difficult? There not expensive. Like $10. Just don't feel like putting it together just to have to take that part off again.

Is there an easy way to get the fitting off a trans? I'm talking the trans cooler line, rear line. It shredded off in the trans case.

use a easy out inside of the broken off piece . it taps in (with a hammer) and then you turn it left handed to extract the screw.
