Out of no where my dana 60 in the highboy started leaking. It might be because of the sandblasting and they shot sand at the seal but i don't know.
Anyone know of a handy how-to on how to do this or if someone can walk me through it real quick? Just take an impact and take that nut off then just pull stuff out until i get at that seal or what
THis is exactly what i am talking about but they don't say how to swap the seal really

Pull the nut and slide the yoke off of the pinion. That's all you gotta pull to get to the seal. (edit: just remembered that there may be a dust/rock shield on the yoke if somebody hasn't already trashed it). Then swap out the seal. I believe the D60 uses spacers instead of a crush sleeve for bearing preload, so you should be able to just run that nut back on with an impact. Ideally you should use a new nut, but some loctite on the threads on the old nut would probably be sufficient.

Ryan,
You might want to have a jaw type puller around for the yoke too, they can be stubborn.

This is weird...
So it spontantiously had the leak and it was quite a few drips every couple hours and now it is not leaking at all what-so-ever
I've driven around town all day too. No leak.
Cool?

Is it out of fluid? I had a friends truck I borrowed that was leaking from the seal before I took it. After a short pull of a heavy trailer the rear end was growling bad. I asked if they had a leak and they stated, "it stopped". Ya, beause it was out of gear oil!!!

no
Actaully just before it stopped I topped it off. Its like adding more fluid fixed it.

Re: rear axle pinion seal leak - d60. need to fix it...
This just happened to me, too ('bout a month ago). Found a puddle of thick oil under the rear end back in the summer, and meant to add more lube but never got around to it... When I started out a couple weeks ago, the truck felt really sluggish (more than normal - 1969 F-100 Styleside with the 240 six and automatic), and when I made my first turn, I heard some chattering noise, that went from intermittent to fairly regular and louder within a mile.
Got it back home, and once up on the stands, the RR wheel felt really stiff compared to the other three.
My guess is that I've got a rear axle disassembly ahead of me, but has anyone had any success with bringing one back to life just by adding gear lube (and fixing the leaky seal)?
