AOD Swap

Post by Tirehead72 »

Im swapping a 95 351W into my 71F100.. Im debating to go C6 or an AOD -Trying to weigh fuel n drivetrain wear against ease of swap and durability. Dont use for heavy hauling or towing. Currently running a tired 360 w a C6. any driveshaft length-spline issues w the AOD? Can I use the 95 flexplate ?(think its the HD version of EAOD behind it now) Donor is a 95 F350.. Like to keep it as "bolt in" as possible..

Funny you ask, because I just did the c6 to aod swap. I chose the 1980-1993 AOD, because it is not computer controlled and neither is my engine. When going from the c6 to aod I had to swap flex plates, and shorten the front portion of the 2 piece drive shaft by 4.5".

However since you are going through the dificulty of putting in a computer controlled 351 in there, why not just keep the engine hooked to the e4od thats behind it right now? The engine and trans computers are probably hooked together anyways. And if the f350 is 4x4 you will need to find a 2wd tail housing if the 71 is 2wd.

Go with the AOD, unless you can keep the tranny already mated to the 351. I swapped to the AOD and I likey. Depending on what tranny you already had, you may or may not need a different starter as well. As J41385 said, the AOD is a little longer so some modification will be needed there also.

If you do go with the aod, get one from a 1992, or 93 F150 with a 302, those are the best AOD's that ford made. It may be hard to find, but dont get a pre 1988, they had poor rear oiling, and probably already have damage.

Does the EFI 351 have a mechanical fuel pump mount? I know the 300 EFI engines had the mount but ford never milled out an opening.

The fuel pump boss was no longer machined for a mechanical pump after 91 I think.Theres 3 choices in front covers though...reverse flow water pump w pump mount blocked by bolt on cover (motorsport or aftermarket),old syle water pump w mount (v belt engines) and the 91 up reverse flow and not machined. I think the eccentric that bolts to cam gear was ditched in 91 also.. Ford crate motors motors, marine, industrial I beleive have the mounting& lobe to fit several applications...
