Any truck 8.8 axles made with 28 splines?
Simple question - Were any truck 8.8" rear axles made with 28-spline shafts?

No. The 8.8 rearend was never offered in a truck. The only rearends offered include:
- 9" Ford
- 9-3/8" (fairly uncommon)
- Dana 44
- Dana 60 (both a LD 5-lug version and the HD 8-lug version)

I'm not sure, but look for info on the late 90s Explorers. They came with an 8.8, I believe.
On edit: I believe the Explorers all have 31 spline axles, but this webiste: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html says that 1990+ 4.0L Rangers came equipped with the 8.8 28 spline setup.

Say what? Most ford half ton trucks used the 8.8 starting in the mid 80's on up to at least 2000, maybe even still today.FORDification wrote:No. The 8.8 rearend was never offered in a truck.

, Well I know that rangers/explorers used them at least, not sure on F-150s. I think Kieth was referring to the 8.8s not being offered in our trucks as they weren't offered in our trucks.ScreaminZ wrote:Say what? OK, I guess I should have clarified myself. I meant it wasn't offered in a bumpside (or dentside) truck. Sorry for the confusion.

80's and up f-150s have 8.8s but i don't know if they are 28 spline or 31. i would imagine 31.. but you should be able to use the carrier out of any 8.8
i've read that all rangers/explorers with 4.0 v6 have 31 splines

Aren't the Ranger/Explorer axles offset to one side? Maybe that doesn't matter, especially given the super-long driveshaft on a LWB bumpside.....

I know alot of mustang guys use the explorer and ranger 8.8 axles in their cars... http://www.mustangandfords.com/index.html
I doubt it would interfere with anything or bind anything up, because the angle is slight...
Or appears so...

The explorer/ranger axle is offset to clear the gas tank that runs alongside the driveshaft. My explorer has 31 spline axles, I have heard that some of the rangers have 28's, not sure about bronco II's.

Why not just find a F150 axle that's already got a limited slip differential in it? Those are plentiful and not too hard to find. No need to mix and match different axle parts.

That'd definitely work too. I haven't tried hard to find one, but I was halfway assuming they would be fairly hard to come by. Having done a lot of crown vic junkyarding in the last couple years, i was surprised at how many of those came with posi.ScreaminZ wrote:Why not just find a F150 axle that's already got a limited slip differential in it? I'm pretty intrigued by the explorer axle though. I need to measure mine and see how the width compares. Wish I'd have looked into that a year ago - the yards were FULL of clunker'd explorers.
