convert from manual to A/T in '67

Post by wade »

Hi group, I just joined here and looking for a bit of advice. My wife wants to restore a particular 1967 F100 2WD and the first order of business will be swapping the manual tranny with a C6. I'm not at familiar with these old trucks and I'm at the beginning of my research here. Can anyone tell me what I'll need to do this conversion and where I can find the parts? I'm sure I can find a C6 easy enough, there are quite a few on Craigslist. I'm wondering about getting the column shift set up and what about the driveshaft? Thanks, Wade

parts needed:
short tailshaft transmission with bolt on yoke
correct length driveshaft
automatic steerring column to match you steering box
shift rod from column to transmission
automatic carb
kickdown rod from carb to transmission
you may already have the correct speedo cable
you will also need the floor hump cover to put a c6 in a 67

Try adding power steering and power brakes at the same time as the auto. Try a pick n pull or get a beater and transfer parts.

I'm thinking you'd be better off finding a donor truck with all the parts you need for the conversion, especially if you want to add power steering and power/disc brakes.
BTW Fordman, I replaced a 3spd standard with a C6 in my '68 and it has the low non-removable tranny hump, is a '67 different ? :hmm:

No, it's just that installing a C6 into a low-hump truck is much easier with the extra room of the add-on hump. A C6 will fit without the taller hump, but it's extremely tight!

Right, There is about 1 1/2" clearance, so it's a pain to remove the transmission crossmember. I have to jack the tranny up against the cab, take all 3 of the trans mount bolts out (the two short ones are a b#%&*) and slide the mount out sideways. Then the crossmember will slide out. I have a tall hump pan in my parts truck but I like the low hump much better.

I actually had to trim a little metal out of my way to squeeze my aod in there. Once it was in it had a little room, but couldnt get the bell housing in without cutting a little. :(

i didnt go into my install because my truck is a 65 not the same as 67-72 i had to do a lot of cutting , reshaping , had to jack cab off the frame 6 in to clear cross member to slide trans in from rear i figured that was easier than pulling motor . and had to make my own hump . its a tight fit but she fits and works good. wes

the 65/66 trucks use the same hump cover as do the 67-72 trucks. so the floor is the same from 65-79 in our size of trucks.

I pulled the whole front clip off mine, took maybe 45 minutes. The PO had torn it down to paint the frame and undercoat everything so the bolts came out easy. Then I just lifted & rolled the engine and tranny right out and right back into place with a cherrypicker. An engine leveler makes it much easier. The C6 clears the low hump in my truck with no modification. :hmm:
