shifter lever bowl broken

Post by umpalumpa1985 »

72 f100, power steering, c6 trans. I went to put the truck in park today, and the inside part of the shift lever bowl that grabs the notch on the column to move the linkage broke off from the outside part of the bowl. I have called around, and nobody seems to have this part. Unfortunately, there's not a boneyard around here that I can pick one up from. Does anyone have one of these, or know where I can get one, because right now my shift lever is a pair of vice grips. . .

I got mine for around $45 if I recall correctly from LMC. It has been a while so I am not positive on that price. Here was my thread about mine:

It has a pic of the new one in the package for the part number if needed. Hope that helps.

Disregard. It turns out that the long metal sleeve that turns broke/disconnected/FUBAR'ed from where it is attached to the linkage. Any way to get this and replace it, or do i need a new steering column?

If you're talking about the shift tube that goes down through the column, I've got an NOS one.

PM me if you're interested.

Pretty much the entire column has to be disassembled.

Here's a link to rebuilding the manual column: http://www.fordification.com/tech/3spd-column_01.htm

The automatic column is similar. Here's a schematic: http://www.fordification.com/tech/image ... column.jpg

With an automatic, it's probably not all that bad, at least not as hard as a manual.

Good thing is, it's really easy to pull the column, and you'll find it easier to deal with the Neutral Safety Switch with the column on a bench.

I have nowhere to take it apart right now, and I definitely don't have a bench. I'm on a temporary assignment to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fl, and I'm living in a hotel room right now. So it has to be done in the truck. If anybody has done it on an auto before, I would really like some advice. Like how to put it in. :o

take the column out and put it on the tailgate.

remove the steerign wheel. loosen but do not remove the two bolts under the tss. unhook the tss wiring under the dash. de pin the wirign connector. mark each place and color as to where they go back into the plug. remove the tss and tss housing from the column. the shift bowl and tube will spring upwards. pull the tube up slightly then wiggle the shifter arm so it releases from the shift tube. pull the shift tube out. reinstall the new tube and spring wiggle the shifter arm again so that the tube seats completely. reinstall the tss housing. those two bolts are fun. put everything back the same way you found it. now the reason it is easier to remove and replace the shifter tube out of the truck is because of the shift arm on the bottom art of the column. do not forget to remove the nss tang from the shifter tube. it sticks out of the column near the bottom.

it has to go through the shift arm on the column at the bottom outside of the firewall. it will seat or lock into the arm.
