i have a 70 F-100 2 wheel drive with a 302 and what i believe to be a C4 auto. The truck sat for 6 years because the previous owner said the trans got hot and would spew tranny fluid all over the place. I got to take it on a good long drive for the first time today and when i stopped to put gas in it, it happened. Tranny fluid pored out of the vent tube.Tons of it. For about 5 minutes or so. I have spent the past hour reading on countless forums and people are saying that i could have the wrong dipstick and might be filling it to full. I was wanting to know how to ID the correct dip stick tube for this truck, and how long my trans dip stick should be from where the handle is to where the full mark is. I am also gonna blow some compressed air through the trans cooler tomorrow to see if it could be plugged, and change the filter.
Does any one have a dipstick they can measure for me? Or any other ideas? Thanks for reading

Re: Need trans help
Get the number off of the tag on the intermediate servo and post it. Or, drain the trans and torque converter and put 8 quarts in and see if the problem is still there. The vent is on the top side of the trans, there certainly should not be fluid present at the top of the trans.

Pull the inspection cover off at the bottom of the bellhousing and rotate the motor around until you see a drain plug near one of the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts. Remove the drain plug in the 6 o'clock position.

Re: Need trans help
c4 case fill dip stick casting number D5DP-7A020-BIB. I think this number means it came from a granda of about 1975 or up vintage. i got this from a out of a 73 F100 that originally had a 6 cyl ening in it. but when i foudn the truck at the junkyard i thad a 302 with this c4 case fill in it. i hope that helps. is yours case fill or pan fill. that will make a difference. original truck C4's had pan fill transmissions.

Re: Need trans help
it is a pan fill. In an attempt to fix this problem, years ago the PO installed a tranny cooler that was tapped into the return line coming from the rad. When i blew compressed air into it, it seemed plugged. A bunch of black crap blew out the other side fallowed my a little bit of tranny fluid. I pulled the pan and am in the process of changing out the filter now and then i will drain the converter also. I will also get the number off that tag and post that as well.

Hey im wondering if anyone has one of these pan fill c4 trannys that can do me a quick favor. I need to know what the length is from the top of the dipstick tube to the full mark on the dipstick. I think mine might be low. I'll have a new dipstick Tuesday but was hoping to check it today with a close hanger or something.

Transmission dipstick marks: My 71 300 I6 with a C4 trans has the following marks on the dipstick.
There is a rubber grommet/seal at the top of the dipstick, which defines the depth that the dipstick will penetrate into the transmission. From the base of this grommet to the first (top) mark on the dipstick, it is 18 ". 5/16" below that, there is another mark. On the dipstick, there are two arrows pointing at each of the marks, and it says" do not fill if between arrows". My fill tube enters the transmission at the base of the transmission, "the pan", it would seem. Now, I'll go put the dipstick back in the transmission.
