Re: Shifter trouble
Gads! I had this problem on my '68, had to call a buddy to find out WTH? Pop the shifter back out. There are 2 pieces of metal, they are mirror image of each other, the one on the left looks like the letter C. Push the clutch in, and use a large screwdriver or tire iron to slip them until they are lined up in the center. Shouldn't take too much force. Once they are lined back up in the middle, put the shift handle back in and twist the lock back in.
When in doubt, hit the gas. It may not be the right answer, but at least it ends the suspense!!

Which transmission do you have?
It's hard to diagnose without a little more information.

Re: Shifter trouble
First off is it a floor shifter or is it 3 on the tree? If it is a floor shifter, and stock it's a 4-speed and either an NP435 or a T18, If it is an NP435 reverse is over and down if it is a T18 Reverse is over and up. Let us know and we'll try our best to help you out .

Later T18s also had reverse over and down.Caseys71 wrote:First off is it a floor shifter or is it 3 on the tree? Re: Shifter trouble
Whoops , Didn't think of that but it is most likely the case that it is one of the earlier versions as they were produced from '66-77 or '78 can't remember. Now that you mention it though Redcap the best way to identify it is to remove the transmission cover from the floor and check out the top plate I know for a fact the T-18's used 6 bolt cast iron plates, while the NP-435's had 8 bolt aluminum covers. After you identify it then we can help you for sure, my bad on the first post though .Redcap wrote:Later T18s also had reverse over and down.Caseys71 wrote:First off is it a floor shifter or is it 3 on the tree? Re: Shifter trouble
Hey, no worries. I just wanted to throw it out there that reverse location isn't the end-all of granny-gear 4speed ID. Generally, the T18s I've found are all early ones...only seen a couple with reverse down.Caseys71 wrote:Whoops , Didn't think of that but it is most likely the case that it is one of the earlier versions as they were produced from '66-77 or '78 can't remember. Went back to driving truck, so haven't been on here in months. You are welcome, glad it worked. For the record, my 68 has the NP 4 speed in it.
Cheers!
