C6/4R100 Frankenstein

Post by Rockerdog »

I'm having way too much fun building a C6 for my 69 F250! I New about the E4OD mods and went to see my new best friends Paul and Robbie at Ford. These guys build Ford automatics all day long and, when I asked if they had the parts I'd need, they said "yeah I guess you could do that but why?" Then Paul pointed to a 4R100 and said "When you could use parts from that" The 4R100 is as big as a house and sits behind Ford's 7.3 Diesel and takes 700 ft pnds of torque.
First and second gear will be lower and, I think, reverse as well.
Not done yet, but it will be together soon! I'll add some pics soon as well!
if this works it's going to be bullet proof!

Parts used from the 4R100 so far:
Direct Drum
Forward Drum
Forward Planet: Steel cage 6 planetaries (C6 uses aluminum cage 3 planetaries)
Rear Planet: Aluminum cage 4 planetaries (C6 uses aluminum cage 3 planetaries)
Input drive shell with forward sun gear

Today with the internet I google everything.
I think it cool to walk in to a shop, shake hands, talk to someone face to face and build relationships.

Hey John, tell me more. I am not familiar with the mods of which you speak. And by the way, do you know where I could get a good 390 crank and rods and a timing cover. Project has gotten way out of hand (there is even a thread). Your parts are being put to good use.

I got in to the idea because the E4OD modifications give a 10% lower First Gear, 5% lower Second gear and I think reverse as well. The 4R100 is a diesel version of an E4OD with much stronger parts (Really, much stronger than a 390 needs but that's just my normal M.O.) I'm building a new 390 at the same time so it's all going in at once. I don't have a spare crank/rods but I might be able to locate a set for you. I'll call you as soon as I find out. Probably tomorrow. Ditto on the timing cover.

I asked this question here on the site awhile back, don't think I got a straight answer... :hmm:
Really good to know info!

The 4R100 is not the diesel version of the E4OD. They are nearly the same thing, the 4R100 is just a more refined version. My 98 expedition has a 4R100 in it.

It is neat to know those parts swap into the old C6 case.

Average f250 you are absolutley right. Both were used for gas and Diesel applications.
Not only that but according to the pdf file I have, both have the heavy duty planetaries.
I've got it assembled as far as the Input shell and, so far, everything is falling in place.

Thanks Jon, I am trying to track down my phone so if I don't answer, forgive.

Dragon, I am looking for stock crank and rods. I have solid 360 short block and am under the impression that I can use stock pistons, just new bearings for crank and rods and voila, 390. Please correct me if i'm wrong. Also looking for stock timing cover.

You can use the pistons but check the piston deck height. If the top of the block was shaved the .1 difference could be too much. Just make sure before the heads go on the Piston is below the top of the block when it is all the way up. I use mine as a daily driver and high compression is fun but 30 cents more for gas per gallon really hurts.

For internal parts I would go to a machine shop to see if someone dropped them off and never came back or a salvage yard.

Thanks for the info Dragon. It's funny, I use the internet frequently but have always avoided ebay. I guess I just like face to face contact and a handshake when I'm buying something. Maybe time for me to change.

Wow I didn't mean to let this project drag on so long LOL I'm building a 390 at the same time and it's at a stand still till I can come up with the $$ for an Edelbrock 7105. I had one but it turned out to be unsueable due to erosion so I sold it to a welder on Ebay.

Anyway, the trans is basically ready to go. I ended up machining the forward edge of the input shell about .040 to create a little more room between it and the case.
I reeeaalllyy wanted to use the 4R100 Direct Drum because it has an extra clutch and steel but the band hung over the edge so it was a no go. I ended up machining down the top plate of the C6 drum enough to make room for the extra clutch/steel set.
I also installed a shift kit but, when I was in the valve body, it looked like someone beat me to it. I didn't have to do any drilling. Just installed the new parts and put her back together!
I should be able to finish it all up soon and get it in the truck for a break in and road test!
