Krylon 1968 F250 resto/cleanup/i don't know what

Post by 23109c »

Hi guys I introduced myself several months ago with the purchase of a 1968 F250 2wd I purchased from the original owner and planned to use as a work truck/tow vehicle for a car trailer. I started cleaning things up and kept discovering more things that arent right (unsafe). So I figured I would document what's been happening here. First, pics from when I first brought it home.

The truck is in great shape and the PO gave me a great file that had the history of the truck in it. In fact the original invoice showed he traded a 1965 El Camino for the truck. The F250 is a 360/c6 with power DRUM brakes and manual steering. I asked him why manual steering and he explained that power steering was another 100.00 dollars and basically said that in 1968 only p@*(&$@ies needed power steering. HMMM! The truck has very little rust however he lived on the CA coast for about 6mos. which gave the WHOLE truck a light coating of surface rust. Having little experience working on old trucks, I decided to start with the rear brakes to begin refurbishing the truck to a point where it was usable and help me justify the purchase to my wife.
Image
First of all, rear brake job on full floater rear axle is umm fun. One rear cylinder was leaking alot, and one was frozen solid.
Image
All parts were replaced with new with the exception of the adjusters which will be replaced. All parts were bead blasted and repainted with brake paint. Dust shields on inside of backing plates are a pain in the.
Image
And although I was able to post this in about 5 minutes, it took me about 2 mos. in my spare time to complete rear end and brakes.

Good afternoon 23109c!

Your truck looks fantastic--I love the paint scheme.

It looks like you did an excellent job on the brakes! Nice photos also.

Robroy, thanks for the comment. I live in a subdivision and most of my neighbors just don't get why I would work on an old truck. If you have to ask....

Looks really good. As you see from so many of the projects, your body is in great shape. I wish I only had to deal with mechanicals...

Good luck with it, I have a timing cover on the blown 390 out back but I'm sure you'll turn one up closer to home.

23109c,

Ok, now I'm hooked. I loved killakobra's instant makeover of a 67 stepside, and now I'm following of this one. I'm in process of rehabbing my 72 f100 and sense I'll eventually run into the same sorts of issues. In fact, I already have. Pull the engine to fix a leak, figure, might as well replace the rear main, get a new manifold intake, etc. Now, I'm thinking of the krylon front end makeover because my bay has a lot of grease and grime also. So, I'm keenly interested.

The coveralls - were you a 63B in the Army?

, your doing an impressive job, I bet it helps a bunch to have that good of a foundation for your project too. I will definitely be keeping an eye out on this build :pop: :pop:.

Thanks for the comments. Yes it does help to start with a solid vehicle. I have been surprised up to this point how well things are coming apart (only one broken fastener for the whole truck). As far as the camper is concerned, it's gone. It was actually in poor condition with considerable water damage.

Well I have still been hard at it and got the frame and bottom of the cab prepped all the way to the back of the cab. I have used easy off extensively, simple green, purple power, lacquer thinner, wire wheels, scotchbrite pads, ..... Once the metal was satisfactorily clean I seam sealled, masked and started painting (yes!).

Image
Image
The Easy Off took all the paint off the inner frame rails just leaving a little handwork to get them clean. Junk in pockets of crossmember came out with a blast from the wire wheel.
Image
Seam sealer I used. Be careful saying the name out loud, folks get the wrong idea.

All masked up!

Even with just primer on I was getting excited. When I was younger, I would have half assed much of this. Wow, maturity. The primer is Krylon ruddy brown, available at walmart for 2.97 a can. Same price as the paint and I am pretty satisfied with it so far. I don't expect great durability from aerosol so we will see how it holds up over time. I used krylon satin black for the firewall and also will use in on inner fenders and radiator support. Frame is full gloss, chosen for its durability, not for its bling.
