im putting a set of 39.5x13.5 interco super swamper iroks on my jeep. im also putting a bump rear axle in it as it is only a quarter inch wider on each side. what i need to know is this:
Will the 9'' hold up to the 39.5's, or should i use the d60? im talking the 28 spline, 67-72 ford 9''. i dont know any details about the 60 but i believe its a full floating axle. it will either be welded or spooled.
id use the 60 no matter what, but im concerned about the loss of ground clearance. i wanna know if i can get away with using the 9'' to save some space.

If it were me, & I had both rear ends, I would go with the DANA60. Its a sure bet it will hold up. I dont know of anyone on here that has 39" tires on a 9". Thats alot of meat. The big bronco guys rate the 9" & the DANA44 as the same. I however think the 9" is a stronger rear than the 44.

I personally would use the D60 unit, the 9" is a small and on the weak side for the meats you want to run. If you are really worried about ground clearance, grind the D60 housing.

I have a 98' wrangler and also might put a bump rear in it but I have a D70 and a D60. Thinking lifting it and running 35" boggers with ARBs so most likely the D60...

Well if the 9" had 31 spline it would be alot stronger than the 28 spline they don't hold up to alot of abuse.
Some times the bad things about a 9" is that it has a lower pinion than a 60, so you would have to rotate the axle a little more, but if you are lifted a long ways to clear the tires, and you have a short drive line you would have to rotate the pinion up alot so ujoints don't bind up.
The dana 60 will have the 8 lug where the 9" will have the 5 lug, if that don't matter use the dana 60 they will take alot uf abuse and keep on trucking. I had a dana 60 that was welded up in my 67 highboy and running the 390 and running 42's as a daily driver and it took me a year to finaly break an axle and I am alot heavier that your jeep.
Now the dana 60's have different spline counts some are weak some are strong. And the last thing is ground clearance, to me I would not worry about it, but you can cut and grind down that little extra casting ridge off of the bottom you would gane about an inch. I am not sure if I helped you out but good luck with what you are trying to do.
