502 Stroker Motor Question

Post by AK F100 »

Some time over the next two or three weeks I may have the opportunity to look at and maybe buy a 72 2wd Ford truck that the owner states it has a 502 CID Engine and a 3 Speed Automatic Transmission. The engine was said to be built for a Stock Car. From my understanding a 502 is a 460 Stroker Motor, correct?

My question is, what should I look for on the engine. Any specific block or head codes. If I pull a plug and check the stroke, what would the stroke be for a stroker motor. It has been sitting for 2-3 years and was said to be running at that time and was parked because they got tired of replacing rear ends (so they say).

The truck is pretty rough, but I could salvage a few parts and scrap the rest. I am mainly interested in the engine.

Stock 460:
Stroke ... 3.850in
Bore ..... 4.360in

502cid:
Stroke ..... 4.140in
Bore ........ 4.390in
Over Bore . 0.030in

The better stock heads are D0VE and just about any aftermarket head is as good as those. D3VE are some of the worst, but they can be cleaned up to work well.

I say go for it.

That's kinda what I was thinking. Sounds a little fishy, but I'll check it out when I get there. I'll look at block and head codes and check the stroke to see what I come up with. It is definately not an FE, the intake manifold does not go under the valve covers. WRONG

EDIT - It is for sure an FE Engine. Now I just got to get home so I can look at itand see if it's a 360, 390 or a 428. I am thinking it's not a "502" though.
