a little guy with a big hammer moved into my engine

Post by 67_p_car »

on the trip home from the farm, the old gal started banging! shoot

I just put in some non-oxygenated fuel in it - but I can't imagine that would have done it

is it the lifters or rocker rattling from the pinging of fuel? or is it a hard knock from the lower engine. my guess is the pinging from the fuel you put in. i dont know what kind of fuel you are talking about so i am guessing.

non-oxy is fuel available here w/o ethanol and is only for use off road or in cars eligible for "classic car" licensing. please - oh - please be bad fuel!

My experience lately with Off-Road fuels has lead me to believe they are garbage. My in-laws have a 1000+ acre ranch & they dont even run "red" diesel in their equipment anymore. Its full of trash & plugs filters way to quick.

I would drain the tank & lines, prime it with good gas & hope for the best!!

explain the bang better. is a band like pounding you fist on a table, or a small knock like tapping your fingers on the table. :hmm: .

At this point Id say it could be a lifter, piston, rod, even a valve with a broken spring.

like in the subject line - it sounds like someone with a hammer inside the engine - towards the firewall - and probably somewhere from the top of the piston up - don't know what to do with the gas once it's out? I don't have another car to put it in - sure as hell not putting it in the porsche.

just add more gas to what you put in there that will thin it out if its the problem. a real hard knock up top. maybe a rocker shaft bolt came loose or something its hard to tell without hearing a knock what it is. i think its hard to tell anyway.

O come on put it in the expensive car :D
if its that loud sorry to say its a rod knock. thats my conclusion with out hearing it.
ok with new gas in start it and if it still makes the noise pull on of the spark plug wires one at a time the noise will change. when it does that will be the cylinder that has the prob. that will get you a starting point.

really not expensive - it's sort of a vw with lock washers! but it is pretty finicky.

I like the idea of pulling a plug - I'll try that

Called wife (she is in SD at a conference) and the gem said "well, we didn't pay that much for it - so i guess we will just have to fix it!" which is better than "I told you that piece of junk would never run right!"

ok - so now what? replace it? what will be the easiest swap another 240? -- 302 s are a dime a dozen - how much monkeying around will it be to drop it in?
shoot - I don't have time for this.

more descrption and a little checkign htis and that we could help better. its nto going to just blow up with some different gas in it. how is the oil level. if it shows on the stick keep working on it. its possibly not destroyed.

well the oil was down 2 quarts by the time I got home (75mi) ran smooth down and was getting great mpg. the way back I drove 60mph all the way and didn't notice the banging until I was coming down the hill into st. small. it also ran pretty hot the whole way not to sure exactly temp - but hotter than I like. I think the radiator may have a leak.

found a guy in Winona with a 66 240 w/20K on rebuild that he will install for 500 - it is in his van right now and he is planning a 390 swap - so I can hear and drive it - his has a 3 od on the floor transmission on it that I have been told I have to take -- but I don't think I want to cut a hole for it - what do you folks think?

all-in-all I still love this truck!

well if you get his 240, you don't need his transmission, so no holes need be put in your floor. Now he's saying he wants you to take the trans? If so say ok put engine in truck and trans in the bed : )

that's the plan my friend, now chance really ruining the engine by trying to drive it to Winona from the Cities or have it towed? - my jetta doesn't have a hitch or I'd try that.
