1968 F-100 SWB 2WD 302 with a C4 on the floor..
So I'm driving down the road and all of a sudden.. hear what sounds like an exhaust leak.. losing power.. pull over.. pop the hood.. exhaust coming back up through the carb.. damn.. timing issue.
Make it home, barely, and try to start looking for the problem. First thought is gear set and chain, probably slipped a tooth or something like that..
I pull the number one plug, do my best at manually putting the motor at TDC (just with a screwdriver through the hole, but it at least gives me an idea..)
I get close and pull the cap.. THE ROTOR IS 180 DEGREES OFF.. WTF? The rotor is still tight with barley any lag, motor had been running fine up untill this point, slipping a tooth wouldn't put me off this much so whats going on here?
Anyone have any suggestions?

uh, okay I wasn't on the compression stroke..
So back to the drawing board.. set it to TDC (for real this time )
Now, with TDC and the rotor all lined up, the yellow mark on the balancer is about 1/8" before the nipple coming off the block.. what now?

Here's a quick way to get the timing pretty darn close.
Set the timing marks at 6 degrees before TDC.
With a timing light hooked up and key on, rotate the dizzy until the timing light flashes, then carefully tighten every thing down making sure nothing moves.
If you don't have a timing light, you can use a feeler gauge that fits snug until the points open.
For this, you'll need to make sure that the key is off, you can also use a piece of paper the cardboard from a book of matches is nearly perfect...
A match book is darn near as important duct tape for the tool box.
I had something very similiar happen on my '68 CS...
I had a head gasket blow between cylinders toward the outside, so on the exhaust stroke it had what sounded like a bad exhaust leak.
It also suffered a power lose and would blow air on the compression stroke.
i found it by accident when I was trying to figur eout what wasa wrong, I could fee the air blow every time it would be on the compression stroke.

OK kaptnkaos, I'll look into that tonight.. when your gasket blew did it smoke at all? Thats what I thought was odd also, during my whole limp home it wasnt smoking..
I don't know what the heck, I'm going to try to start it up as it is now that I have it some what timed okay, or what should be somewhat timed ok..
