a good motor for a drag truck???
okay so i have a 1971 f-100 sport custom long bed yea kinda sucks long, but then i am going to tub it out and was really not wanting to keep the slow reving 360 in it or the 3 speed in it, really wanting to build something with at least 450 hp or more and more or equal tq and just wonding what carbed engine would get me their, like a 410 or 428 cobra jet or what, i would love to get this truck in the low 12s or in the 11s i think that the 10s are just too far to reatch really and if i need to spray it i will, i deal with nitrous on my 5.7 hemi that i run high 11s and low 12s with a 100 shot in with my 4400 lbs of station wagon magnum, and would love for this truck to do that so what do you guys recomend on engines and if you guys dont really recomend anyting i might just do a 03 or 04 cobra mustang swap and trans, i could get my power # with this set up and not really go internal at all..... and i plan on tubing this out and and frame up resto. and its all right if you guys think im crazy and like to dream big, but my magnum started out running 14.4 and now in the 11s so its alright... you guys might just start hearing alot from me now haha

I would say a 460 based engine.

If 450 HP will get the truck down the track that fast, 450hp with a 410 should not be hard at all without n2o.

Re: a good motor for a drag truck???
I also vote for a 460. I want to say that a F100 would be heavier then a Magnum but am not sure. \
I would also think it would take more then 450 hp to get a long bed truck into the 12's.
For example, my buddy has a 2001 F150 Lightning, it only runs in the 13's stock. Granted it is not a LWB truck.
With the Magnum you also have more weight over the drive wheels, then with a pickup.
I am looking for 450 horses, but I am not expecting anything faster then high 13's at the most.
Should be able to get 500 hp out of a 460 with no major work.

Ya a 460 would do it or you could stroke out the FE fairly easy. About $2000 will give you about 450 c.i.'s. That would put you in the 450 hp range. Then you don't have to track down a 460 (not like that's too hard I guess). Then you could also keep the FE in the bump!

Drop a 427 Cammer in it... it'll blow the 460 away...

Just drop a T-700 in it, and at 1622 horsepower, your truck will melt the tires off it.

I have almost one of every ford v8 & a 300-6 in my shop waiting for a truck, but I dont have a big block. I have always wanted to build one. A guy in town has a duce coupe with a blown 521 & it is bayd azz.....
