exhaust design-thoughts?

Post by towtruckerfour »

This is on my 70 F250. I have a 390 with headers with the inframe auxiliary tank. The driver side pipe runs next to the auxiliary tank and exits before the rear wheel. I've checked with two shops and they don't recommend running it like that. They say to run both sides into one muffler with dual inlets on the passenger side. From there, they can run it out behind the rear wheels on the passenger side or go both sides. I've never had any problems with the exhaust. I like the look and sound of both sides. Does anyone else have a setup like this or similiar? Also, it looks to run about $475. Thanks for your thoughts or opinions.

it wont be duals if it goes into one muffler. turning the drivers side pipe so that it goes down the passenger side is fine. but dont connect the two pipes together or it wont be dual pipes. it will be a single exhuast.

Hey Fordman. I have a book from Flowmaster that shows a Super 40 series that has dual in and out. I like the pipes coming out both sides and really thought they could just redo what I had on the truck. I also thought seperate mufflers would have better flow than two pipes into one muffler. Just my opinion.

If you want duals, you can have them cross the drivers side over to the passenger side and then run both pipes down that side. If you want the tail pipes out both sides they can do that for you without trouble if they know what they're doing. With headers it's a little tricky crossing it over because you can't use the stock location because the header collector sticks back past the transmission/flywheel cover so you have to cross it over after the transmission. Rubiranch did it on his '72 you might want to ask him. He used single exhaust on his but he has headers and crossed it over like you are suggesting.

Thanks for the info. Did Rubiranch sell his truck? I know he was talking about it. I'll have to pm him and see what he did.

Its best to have them cross the drivers side bank over & run both pipes down the pass. side. Thats pretty much standard on newer trucks for people wanting to run duals (gas tank in the way). I have my dodge done this way. Its dual 2 1/2" pipe going to a 2 in/2 out Flowmaster 70 series dumped. I had dual 40 series on it, but in order to clear everything, they had to be stood on end & they drug everytime I went through a deep mug bog. The dual in dual out is flat for better clearence. Plus The truck has better low end now as well.
