eng removal
can i remove my 300 from the np435 to remove it from the truck or will it be better to remove them as a unit? i would like to know because, how hard will it be to reinstall the eng if the tranny is still in the truck?

Re: eng removal
Mine has a T-18, but when I changed engines I left the tranny in place.
The trucks with 4 speeds have the top removable access in the cab.
I tied a thick rope around the tranny, and looped it around a 2x4 that
I placed across the floor. That pretty much held the tranny in place
when I removed the engine. The 435 should be much the same I think.
So my vote is to leave the tranny in place.. Or at least that is what I did.

Re: eng removal
I pulled my 240 six and 3 speed tranny as a unit. It was interesting. I had to remove the tranny crossmember to let it drop down to clear the cab. As it came out the engine pointed skyward and the engine leveler did nothing to fix that. Maybe I didnt have the chains on the right places on the engine but Im not even sure where they should really attach.

Re: eng removal
so, if the tranny doesn't need to come out and i leave it in will it be a pain for me to attach the eng to it when i put the motor back in?

Re: eng removal
It can be a bit tricky, but overall it's not that big a deal.
The main thing is to carefully line everything up real close,
and then just nudge it on in. You can't "manhandle" one into place.
You have to finesse them.. As an example, I had a friend of mine
over to help me stab the engine to the tranny. But he kept trying to
manhandle the thing into place, and between the two of us, we didn't
get it that night. "It got dark on us, so we just quit for the day."
But I came back out myself the next morning, and carefully lined
everything up, and bingo, slid right into place.
But!, that was not the end.. Dummy me forgot to put the cover
plate on..
So I had to pull it back apart and put the cover on.
So I had to restab it, and using the same finesse method, it plopped
right back in. I had much better luck on my own, than I did
with the helper.. :/

Re: eng removal
Not to hijack the thread but is it hard to get the engine and tranny together? My grandfather told me after I pulled mine apart that I would have a deal of a time getting it back together. He said I would need another tranny shaft to stick in through the clutch to line everything up but it will still be a job. He has done this before but Im trying to understand exactly what he means.

Re: eng removal
They make a line-up tool that most any parts store should have. Beats another shaft. And the last one I bought was less than $10. At least my daughter didn't say anything about me owing her. But then, I also didn't get any change back either. Hmmm, have to ask her about that.

Re: eng removal
Did you drop the trans crossmember? Had to do that on a 67 Chevelle once to pull it all out at once. Good luck. Nothing like experience to learn from.

Re: eng removal
nope, put a jack under the tranny and removed the engine. lowered the tranny onto the cross member after the engine was removed.
