carburetor preference ?
Which carburetor do you guys and gals prefer, or think may be the best for all round use ? Engine is 66 Factory stock 289 ,I want one that is the least trouble to keep adjusted . I'm tired of working on them to keep them going . Economy is important more than high perfomance . But trouble free has priority over both uses. The two i have been looking at are . Holley street avenger , 570 CFM , # 0-80570 ,electric choke , vacum secondarys ,center pivot floats .-----The other is a , Edelbrock # 1406, 600 CFM , electric choke, secondarys may be vacum or mechanical , I dont know .advertised as 'calibrated for economy . I would like to get your opinions on just these carberetors please . not interested in ,fuel injection or 2/bl carbs, just these two . If anybody has used them I will listen to you . thanks JIM

I have not had the Avenger series Holley but I've had other Holley series' that I was very happy with. I have had an Edelbrock carburetor but I prefer the genuine AFB on which the Edelbrock is copied. I run an AFB (with Ford kickdown) on my 63, 390 Unibody F100.

Re: carburetor preference ?
No I have a crappy edelbrock on my falcon futura 289 , its been there 15 years , not so great . I have had hollys on most of my other work trucks , allways had to keep them adjusted often . I heard that holly has made there new carbs more friendly and did away with a few problems . I am retired now and don't want to work on them as much , just drive. Please don't tell me to take them to a tune up shop , as the mechanics don't like for me to peek over there shoulders and watch , LOL I just want some honest opinions, not start any arguments . The two carbs I listed did interest me .I allways do my own work if I have the right tools .jzjames wrote:You've already made up your mind. RIGHT??!

Thank you ; I do have a AFB , I picked up at a swap meet I could rebuild it . I would like to find out more about the new holly carb. series. I think most of my problems on my holly /fords were the guys that worked for me liked to adjust things for me . Thats what I thought. I got myself in deep doo doo on anothere forum by saying something a few others never agreed with me on . I'm new here so I'm being carefull . Its sorta like ford chevy, can get out of hand . I like them both and have both , edelbrock , holley , ford , chevy . You have a good day now JIMflyboy2610 wrote:No, you're fine!my2beamtk wrote:Where ? I'm new here , am I causing a problem with that simple question ? LOL . Re: carburetor preference ?
I prefer Holley myself i've used them for over 40 years.I think their easier to tune,less parts involved internally, but I've had some problems to. It seems they are harder to clean out the passages if they get gummed up. You have to soak them in carb cleaner completely covering them to get them clean internally. I have'nt used the new Advenger carbs. My Holley isthat I have on my truck is a 1980's 3310 that is non emmison. I have heard that some of the new Holley models you can't adjust the float from the outside. I don't like that.

ya rekon??
Holley.390 cfm if you can find one reasonable. Personally' i'd stay away from the avenger carbs.. see if you can find a 01850-2. jet it correctly & off you go.
Edelbrock = controlled fuel leak.
as always...
As a metter of fact, i AM trying to keep up with the Jones'

Re: carburetor preference ?
Thanks everybody ; I'm getting the information I was looking for . I looked at the holley with non adjust floats from the outside. I don't believe I would want that unless somebody can convince me otherwise . George, do you no what the CFM is on the 3310 ? Fitzwell , do you no if the holley ,01850-2is still being produced new ? Is there a holley web site ? JIM

Re: carburetor preference ?
I run the same model holley on my 401 fe and 86 roller 5.0. It is the model 80457 which is a great all around carb imo
