Boat motor question

Post by wildcard »

I hope I'm not out of line putting up a boat question. If so, accept my apology. My 50 HP Evinrude ( 72 model ) won't even try to turn over. It's getting full voltage from the battery to the solenoid, but none coming out through either of the two posts on the solenoid when the key is on or trying to start it. I tried shorting between the 2 posts, no luck. There is no clicking like my truck does when that solenoid is bad. It has the same type solenoid as my bump. Could it possibly be that the solenoid is just bad ?

Thanks papabug. It's not locked up, I could turn it by hand. I put a new solonoid on with no change. Kept messing around and figured out it had to be a short somewhere. Finally found it was where the wires enter the motor housing. Apparently I moved the right one and now don't know which it was since it's working again. :? So I taped them up good and tight and took it out this morning and never had a problem. Maybe it will stay that way until it's cool enough to replace all the wires.

Yup, run it till it drops out again, then put in some new wires.

Glad it was an easy fix.

Well it saved the day Saturday. Sunday was a trip to remember though. Wouldn't start after unloading. I was in the back tinkering with it and the solonoid was clicking but starter was not working. Getting 12 volts all the way to the starter and when I tapped on it, it would bump once in a while. So now she gets a new starter.
My best friend and my GRANDsaughter wanted to troll about a 1/4 mile from the ramp and fish a cove. I told them it was gonna rain. Man was I right. Hit all of a sudden and it took a while for that trolling motor to get us back. 2 rain ponchos and 3 people. Not a good combination.

:yt: Since it's one thing after another, I'm putting it back in the shop and he's going all through the motor and changing all gaskets and looking to see if there's anything else that looks ready to go out and get it all fixed now. So next time I go to the lake I won't have to wonder whats next. Being a 72 model I guess it thinks it's a bump. And we know how they like to be worked on.

Boats are money pits. I agree. I had a 92 Bayliner Capri with a 90 horse Mercury on it. I must have busted 4 or 5 props in our stumpy lake. Then the lower unit went out. With all the stump grinding, I was expecting it.

I sold it in 04' I think. The guy I sold it to still takes it to the lake. He says its still runnin good.

fordman that would cost more than what I paid for the entire setup. I only paid $700. It had been setting in a barn for several years since the mans son passed away. A good friend of mine lives next to him and said he had never even seen it til he decided to sell it. So I expected it to have a few bugs to work out. But so far the trolling motor, depth finder, bilge pump and everything else is in great shape. The rollers on the trailer ( all 27 of them ) work fine. Boat sits entirely on rollers, no wood anywhere on trailer. He said most people that saw it only wanted the trailer. It's a Holsclaw if anyone has heard of them. Supposed to be top of the line in their day. Has 2 coil springs on each side and a shock on each side. I did replace the hitch to upgrade it to a 2" ball.
JEF199, I put a rebuilt starter on it. They wanted nearly $300 for a new one, $125 for a rebuilt one. Wish I'd known how to replace the brushes.

In the 70's Holsclaw trailers were the best money could buy. Thats why it is still in working order. The trailer probably cost twice as much as you paid for the whole thing in 70's dollars.

Speaking of boats.... You guys know who made some slick azz boats back in the day?? CHRYSLER! They had some awsome boats.

This one is equipped with a 340. I bet it sounds sweet wide open.

Dont forget about Webbcraft boats. They were awsome as well. They were made right up the road from me in Collinsville Oklahoma.

furnitureguy, the only thing I don't like about the trailer is how high it sits. I'm gonna drop it down to 8" wheels from the 12"ers. But I'm saving the old ones since they're the same color as the rest of the trailer so I figure they're probably originals. I almost have to back my exhaust under water now to float it.

papabug, that first pic looks really good. It's a shame they don't make em like that anymore.

I have to back mine until the exhaust is underwater, just don't shut it off and it will be fine.

The one thing to remember about going to smaller tires is, you are going to greatly increase the rpms that your wheels are turning! Most people don't realize how fast trailer tires are turning going down the road. Just make sure you put in new high quality bearings, and keep a close eye on them. Nothing worse that having a wheel bearing go bad on a boat trailer out on the road.

I bought a Glastron from ebay 4 years ago for $2300 and its done great until last time out so Ive gotten my money out of it.Started overheating while at idle but cools off as soon as you take off so its probably impeller.
