Manual Choke on Holly carb.

Post by 1970f100x »

Ok, so I'm pretty sure the carb i have on my truck is original. It's a holly with a manual choke. The problem is, when I was taking off the air filter, I was playing with the choke, and I noticed that when i moved the cable lever back and forth it didn't do a thing to the valve, all it did was increase and decrease the rpms. I could manually open and close the choke, but i need to be able to do that from inside the cab. There aren't any parts missing, what do you suggest I do? Is it a possibility that I just need some carb cleaner to loosen it, or what?

1970 should've been a hot air choke and not a manual.

Someone correct me but didn't all these trucks come with 2bbl Motorcraft carbs? I would suggest your carb and your intake are not stock but aftermarket. But I have a lot of experience with manual chokes on both 2 and 4bbl Holleys. As Fordman mentioned, have someone gently pull the choke button on the dash to see if the butterfly valve moves. From the picture it looks to me like this was a conversion kit from an automatic to a manual choke. That is the reason you have a fast idle when the choke is partially pulled. And that is a good thing to have for a warm up. And the reason I know that is that the adjustment screw for the fast idle is just visible between the rear mounting screw and the cam nut on the butterfly actuator. Don't mess with that screw! It's just fine. A little WD40 on all the cable points and moving parts will keep it working just fine.

Some trucks did come stock with a 4V carb. And I think Holley was one of the choices. So it could be stock.

They were 2bbl Autolite carbs.
