Time for a new carb...

Post by Darrman »

I am sick of jacking with my carburator every time I need to start the truck, so I have made up my mind I am going to a get a reman unit. However I cant seem to find exactly what I need.
Here is the thing I want/need out of the carb: Motorcraft/Autolite 2100 2brl, for a 390, for a automatic trans, hot air choke or electric.
I am looking at several different ones here and there, problem is they claim one is the same as another, a 351 is the same as a 360, is the same as a 390, etc.
I currently have a true truck carb, 1:21 (I think) jets. I rebuilt it with a basic rebuild kit, it works but I cant adjust the gas mixture, no matter what it runs so rich your eyes start burning while standing around it. It had a pretty bad power valve leak, I sorta fixed it with some silicone but I think that has worn out already.
Also do I need a different carb for a early 70's 390, that is what mine is, not a true '69.
So does anybody know of a reputable source for the carb I need?
Thanks!

After asking around town all the local old timers told me to go to a shop in Ceder Hill, after calling them I was impressed at how knowledgable they were. I sent the carb over this morning, it will get a complete rebuild for $130, includes a silver powdercoating. He pointed out several issues just by looking at it, so hopefully this will finally fix this.

Update, got my carb back this afternoon and got installed. What a difference, it runs sooo much better, idles perfect at 800 in park, 600 in gear, electric choke works perfect. Also it is not running rich! And it responds!
Anyways, the butterfly valves where not shutting all the way, the vacuum assist on the choke was broken, the brand new power valve was toast, and the whole thing was totally out of whack because of the constant leak from the power valve.
Now I wonder if I should bump the timing up, its 8 degrees now, but am getting a intermittant popping in the exhaust note, not loud, kinda in the background. The 390 is stock except for a .30 bore and headers.
