Opinions on best engine oil...

Post by cmoore »

Greetings fellow addicts,

I've been getting reacquainted with my new '70 F250 CS like my Dad had new when i was a kid. This one has a 360 in it but I'm uncertain on the correct mileage, as my cluster (speedo, fuel, temp) is inop. at the present moment. Which oil weight, organic vs.synthetic, and brands have given you the best sevice life?

While I eventually plan a rebuild, it's "not in the cards" right now. I want to treat it right so it will get me to the rebuild when it does happen. What do you guys think of gas and oil treatments (Lucas, STP, etc)?

Thanks for the time,

Chris

averagef250: Thanks for the info on the oil. What's the deal with Fram and K&N? Filter-wise, who's got a reliable product?

Shell Rotella T 15w40 and Wix filters for me, most if not all additives imo are just voodoo juice but having said that if i have a high mileage motor that's burning oil i'll add a quart of Lucas.

I'm not so sure store brand oil and filters isn't just as good, my only pet peeve is changing it regularly. I ran my daily 2000 F150 up to 150K miles on store brand oil/filters and switched over to full synthetic at that point because I was just getting tired of changing the oil so much, but even then you're supposed to frequently change the filter, so I think I'm switching back to store brand oil/filter deals that are like $15 or so for the whole deal (although my 2000 uses 6.5 qts).

Fram filters come apart internally and send element material into your engine bearings. If you have an engine failure in a vehicle under warranty and the dealership sees you have a fram filter on it they will refuse the warranty.

K&N air filters are a matter of stating improved flow from the same surface air of filter material. You have to have something wrong with you to not realize that means the filter lets more crap through it. If you want more airflow get a bigger filter made of quality materials that stop dirt. Putting oil on poor filtration media doesn't instantly make it filter better.

The Rotella and Delvac are good choices. If you aren't running a roller cam make sure what you use has ZDDP in it.http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engi ... index.html

Well heck? My old shop teacher was sold on Pennzoil. Maybe he owned stock or something! But I just followed his lead. I live TX, so the winters are mild. I run Pennzoil 10w30 in all four vehicles. The 2000 GMC 5.3 rolled 192,000 yesterday, never ad any engine problems (infact only had the trans rebuilt at 176K) I know this is a Ford site, but the truck has been very good to me. The 06 Hyundai has 76K with no problems. The 08 Hyundai is still under 25K (the wife's). The Geo Tracker 4x4 had 190K when I sold it. Several others over the years that went well over 100K with no engine probs.

I'm not a proponent of Pennz....just what I've always used.

WIx filter, or Napa..(made by wix) K&N air filter. As far as oil, Valvoline, or Royal Purple. I've run K & N filters for years, never had a problem.

I use the store brand, hear dof people taking tours of oil bottlng plants where same oil dispenser different label every other bottle. Filters for air i user fram micro Guard. Oil I use motorcraft FL1a's seems 90% of Ford/Merc Engines use the 1A.

Using a Fram i killed my 302 when the filter media mentioned above got cuaght in my oil pump pickup screen. killing #3 and #6's Rod bearings.

I just thank its funny their commercial " If you don't ask for fram, your asking For it!" I think their old stuff was probably ok but now they aren't.

There's a difference between a paper filter and an oil-soaked cotton filter though. You have to compare apples to apples for that to make sense - filtration depends on both media type and surface area.

Keeping in mind this is all just opinion, and these types of things can get very heated and irrational so quickly that I know of at least one board where oil post are banned along with politics and religion.

That said I run mobil 1 in everything and filters from the manufacturer. So VW filters on VW's, Honda filters on the Honda, and Motorcraft on the Ford.
