The 300 straight six

Post by 1970f100x »

Does the 300 have more torque and pulling power than the 360/390? What is the good and bad of the 300 straight six? I'm thinking about switching out my 360 for it eventually.

No, it doesn't. The FI 300's closely match the 302's for torque(in the 90's), but not HP. The 360/390 won't be beat in that catagory. The 300 will last forever and may be much easier on gas and simple to work on. However, performance parts are harder to come by as well as the gains from them. If you can live with a 6, they are by far one of the best engines ever made IMO.

Performance parts are not that hard to come by.

I love my 300 it has all the power I need for a DD like mine. It will still haul 2 tons when she needs to without any problems.

Read up on the mods to do to it over on www.Fordsix.com you can do most of them without effecting the reliability at all.

Best engine ever made! :2cents:

I don't think so. 302's are great high revving horse power motors but have no low end torque. The 300 6 is the opposite. It all depends on what the truck is being used for. Try hauling a heavy load with both engines and you'll be able to tell the difference right off the bat which one has more low end torque. If you want the best of both worlds then go with an FE. 390 is your best bet. :2cents:

That's quite funny if I may say. I would like to see a 302 that could even remotely dream of touching 300 six off idle and low end torque. an FI 300 with basic, easy upgrade is an easy 225HP and 350TQ engine with an amzingly broad powerband. You can lug the dickens out of one.

A $200 300,000 mile FI300 six with $50 in go parts will make a mockery of a 302 pound for pound of truck. The same FI 300 is equal to a stock non-egr truck 390 running right in all areas except fuel economy. The 300 is quite the sipper, even under full load.

I love FE's, but I've pulled one in favor of FI 300 power and loved it for a peppy DD that would tow anything if I needed it to.

We live in the age of the internet, parts are NOT hard to find anymore it just requires a little research on your part, the 300 six is one of the best engines ford ever produced, hands down, it's comparable to a diesel in terms of miles of dependable service it will give you before a rebuild, it's a great little motor, i had one many moons ago in a beater '79 i had, well over 400,000 miles on it before it bit the dust.

A 300 6 would own a 302 hands down when it comes to towing. The in laws have a beater dent 4x4 3/4 ton with a 300 6, on propane. That old truck is hoss. In 1st gear you can simply let it idle & it will walk over anything.....

My bad. Was thinking along the lines of total torque, not where it lies in the curve. The 6 does produce more on the bottom end. Otherwise, when you look at peak on OEM's w/FI, 260 vs 270lb/ft is pretty close. Glad to provide some humor with my oversite.
