67 f100 4x4 steering question

Post by tybob81 »

What are my options on the power assist steering set up on a 67 f100 4x4? Is there any swap to go with a full power steering box and junk the power assist set up? Will a 67-77 bronco w/ps box bolt in?

I dont think any thing just bolts right in.

I put a disc brake front axle and P/S gear from a '78/'79 F150 in mine.

The axle bolts right in but you have to "modify" the frame for the steering gear.

Thats a nice looking truck it would be worth doing it right. :2cents:

Thanks we just completely restored it for a customer. But he didnt do or have us do anything to the factory box. We had a machine shop repair the valve and make us a new shaft for the steering ram. Just wanting to know if there was a easy swap using some other year ford box. the customer now wants to posibly update the box to a latter style to ditch the power assist set up.

I am using a 78-79 Bronco box that is drilled and tapped to run hydro assist.
What is the owners intended use for this truck? You could check with PSC Motorsports to see what system they can build for ya if he wants to keep the power assist but just get a up to date more reliable version. They are pretty pricey but well worth the money from what I have heard.

AFAIK, the early Bronco box and the F-100 manual box are about the same as far as mounting is concerned. Only problem is, they are going for huge dollars because they're rare and rock crawlers like them.

Another alternative is an early-'90s IFS Toyota box. You need a different pitman arm, but they mount almost the same as the F-100 box. I am in the process of doing one of those on my truck, I think it's going to work out pretty well.

I heard about the toyota swap but didn't know how much involved it was. My customer decided to buy a rebuilt maual box and keep the power assist set up.

Funny, after researching all the options to replace that setup on my 69 4WD I arrived at the same conclusion. I had the valve body, box, and ram re-built by Lares Corp, and found new tie rods and drag link.

We put a new gear box and all new steering linkage on it. Let me tell you it drives like a dream compared to before!! He liked it so much he decided to keep it stock with the power assist.
