1971 460 lincoln engine swap
Hey guys,
I came across what I believe is a good deal on a 1971 Lincoln Continental with a 460/C6 drivetrain. This was the last year before smog killed the power on these motors. This engine is the original motor with fairly low miles. The best part is that in 1971 this 460 was rated at 365hp and 500lb of torque. It would be a 10.5 to 1 compression ratio so I would have to run premium, but who cares (not my daily driver and my commute is 2/10 of a mile). I was just wondering how you felt about this swap (currrently a 360FE)??? The truck has 3.00 gears so I think it would be a good cruiser, and I think that motor would still make it a great tower for 8K and under (even with the 3.00 gears). What do you guys think?

You might suffer with the 3.00 R&P towing 8000lb a little especially climbing hills. But all in all you would do fine. Go for it

Re: 1971 460 lincoln engine swap
DO IT ! I put a 70 model MKIII 460/c6 in my 63 shop truck about 10 years ago and have never regreted it. Its a blast to leave about anything at a red light, and it will pull like no other(even as low as mine is).The only changes I made were a Stealth intake,750 vac sec holly, duraspark distributor. On the highway at speed limit I average 15-18(keeping my foot out of it) with 3:00 gears and 255/50/17 tires.I run regular unleaded with no problems but I will add hardened seats when the motor comes out for freshening this summer(then it goes in my 71).Be prepared to replace rear tires often as it is easy to haze them when you want or dont mean too.Good luck with it.

It seems you have the trans, (C6) also with this? If so, not much money involved in the swap. Set of Engine Perches and Motor mounts and you're ready. If your present trans is a C6 also, then you will be able to use your present transmission mount, and your present drive shaft will go right in in the same place without any modification.
Back in the later 70's the local Ford Dealer sold and did a lot of this very same swap into the "Bumps" using 1968 to 1971 Lincoln and Lincoln Mark III running gear. The regular Lincoln cars came with 2.75 to 1 rear ends normally, and the Mark III's came with 3.00 to 1 ratios so they would "appear faster" to potential customers.....(another Car Joke on us). I probably done 20 or more of these swaps myself in those days working for that Ford Dealership.......... GO FOR(D) IT!

If I had one handy I'd drop it in my 350 in a hurry.

the lincoln trans has a longer tailshaft so you'll be needing a shorter driveshaft.
And the truck shaft bolts at the front were the lincoln trans uses a slip yoke.
"Three different extension housings (tailshafts) were offered: the Lincoln version at 17.4 inches long; the truck housing at 7 inches long; and, most commonly, the 14-inch length used in passenger-car applications."

Or...you could easily swap out the tailshafts and keep the bolt on yoke and driveshaft.convincor wrote:the lincoln trans has a longer tailshaft so you'll be needing a shorter driveshaft.

Easily?? The trans needs to be completely disasembled ..BobbyFord wrote:

I don't think you should do this! It sounds like it will be trouble and DANGEROUS....if you send it to me (at your expense) I will dispose of it properly for you at no additional cost...OK I JUST WANTED A SPARE FOR MY 72 CREW. You will enjoy this swap..remember the horsepower ratings were really low by then to help with insurance costs. Go for it! If you need any advice on doing the swap just send me a note. Tom
