390 oil leak

Post by jd72hiboy »

I just replaced the rear main, oil pan gasket, valvecover gaskets and still have a leak. The leak on the front appears to be coming from the intake mainfold by the distributor and the leak on the rear is unknown. It seems to be by the rear of the intake manifold. dont know. Hopefully didnt damage the rear main during installation. any ideas?

I'd be willing to bet that the leaking is from your intake manifold's end gaskets. These are notorious for leaks. Is this a newly-rebuilt engine? If so, did you use the intake manifold rail gaskets or RTV?

well since all of the other gaskets have been replaced. more than likely the leaks are the intake manifold.

I suspect the engine is the original 390 (although the sticker on the L/S valve cover identifies a 1970 428, posibly out of a interceptor?) Anyhow, I know its a FE engine and I'm going to reseal the original ford intake man. or posibly install a edelbrock intake. What is your suggestion for gasket sealer for the mating to block and heads and any install tips? what brand of gaskets should I use?

thanks
