Removing Bushings with a Torch

Post by bm52 »

This weekend we plan to remove the old leaf spring bushings. I read somewhere that you could heat up the area around the outside of the bushing, until the rubber starts to boil, and they would come out fairly easy. Sounds fun, I like my torch :D , but I was wondering if this might cause any kind of damage or weakness in the leaf springs eyes by doing this? Also, has anyone tried this method to remove bushings, and did it work OK?

That's probably the easiest way. By concentrating the flame to the inside of the bushings, you're not going to get the spring hot enough to damage it. If you're worried about it, you can just drill them out.

We used this method on a set of old springs on my crewcab and worked out great. was a little smelly.

Just an update, we didn't use the torch like I thought we would. Ended up using a puller to push the bushings and inner shells out of the outer shells. We're replacing the rubber bushings with PST polygraphite bushings, so we don't need the outer shells. They are a real PITA to get out :x . After using a hack saw to cut a seam in each one, I was able to beat them out of the leaf spring eyes.

I was able to use a sawzall to "slice" the sleeve. Getting the bushings in was a pita.
