1970 1971 1972 390's rare???
I have seen three 1971 cs f250 ( bought one)the owners say the have 390 but the vin is a "y"code so its a 360. How rare are the 390's. Any one know?????

Not rare at all, you could probably find a dozen at any given junk yard.

If it is a "Y" in the vin then the owner is either a liar or someone told him it was a 390 when he bought it. Measure the stroke to be sure.

The coil tag means nothing, I've done that!!! I had a truck with a tired 360 in it and after 3 news paper ads stating it was a 360, I said it was a 390 and sold it that weekend. I also removed the coil tag that was on the distributor AND pot on an air cleaner lid that had "390" on it!fordman wrote:the 71 f250 cs we just got has a 390 in it i verified that. the door code also says its a 390. and it has the coil tag still on it too.

i know the tag means nothing but when it had the h code in the vin and i saw the tag measuring the storke was all i had left to totally confirm that it was the original engine in the truck.

That's pretty lame.

Re: 1970 1971 1972 390's rare???
I bought two trucks with 390's: a '68 and a '72. Both turned out to be 360's.
I think lots of people assume that the big V8 is a "390," since "390" is a more well known engine (or so it seems). Probably neither of the folks I bought from had any clue that the engines were really 360's. Well, maybe the guy had a clue who didn't bother to take his copious KFC wrappers and buckets out of the cab before handing over the keys!

My 71 has a car 390 but has the 360 Vin code. It had a 351W air cleaner lid they told me at the lot that is was a 351 and I rolled off at 600 with a 4V 390.
It also was an automatic but i have a NP435.

I was in a situation where I had lost a job and had some unexpected emergency expenses within one month. I really liked the truck and had plans for it but I needed money more than the truck. I did what I had to do at that time to get by.
It's not something I am proud of nor am I bragging about it. I'm just trying to help out other members here by letting people know that this happens a lot. We've all made mistakes.rubiranch wrote:Remember the old saying?, "It takes one to know one".

hey your are right that does happen alot. a sticker is all alot of people do. some people wont even put a new one on it. they will just take the old one off so it doesnt say 360 on the lid.
