The whole set never just part. Ford dropped that partial change policy long before I went to work with them

yea if its not the plastic gear that goes bed. its usually the chain has streched out if it has metal gears.

I installed a "double roller" timing chain on a couple of my FE's. They run great and I have never had one stretch. But yes, replace the whole set. :fr:

3 piece set from Napa. Double rollers work well also. Soak the chain overnight in oil before you install it. Helps prevent dry start.

I never soak my chains over night. Maybe a little pre-oil. Never had problems, even with roller motors. JMHO

Same here pour some oil and go. I never installed a roller chain that was dry from factory the chains always have some lubricant in the rollers. Now on high spring pressure race motors the chain is oiled and the motor turned slowly by hand a few revolutions to get the lifter, cam and chain coated in oil.

Pre-lube the system in that case. Instead of rotating the engine by hand, you can prime it with a drill. Works better and you know everything is well lubed ready to go. And if you are an all out Drag car......Then a Accumulator would be choice. Prime on the spot before ever start! JMHO

i was just wondering about buying the part since napa has them by part and as a set, but jegs has a roller set for $23 that i might try out since the price seems right. this will be my first time doing anything on a motor except for water pumps and head gaskets. thanks for the help guys :fr:

Do the whole set, they're inexpensive. I wouldn't worry about buying real good ones. A $23 NAPA set will probably outlast your engine if it has already wore out one set.
