re: door handle
The entire latch assembly is basically only two parts....the outside door handle, which is only held on by 3 small bolts (accessible from inside the door) and the latch itself, which is attached with 3 screws. The outside door handle's button pushes on a tab on the latch, which releases the door. Of course, there is also one rod which connects the latch to the interior's door-release handle.
If all you're doing is replacing the outer door handles, all you need to do is remove the three bolts holding it to the door. The outer handle and the latch are not connected.

Here's a photo of the inside of the door. The yellow arrow shows the latch mechnism and the green arrow points to the lock.

re: door handle
OH! ok, now I understand what you were trying to describe. Here's a picture showing the door release mechanism removed from a '67. The interior release handle/lever is attached by a screw to the piece on the left side of this pic. The arrow shows where they disconnect. Unfortunately, you have to remove the main latch assembly out as well, but it's only held on by an additional three screws. It's actually a very easy job.
