Project "Uncle Fester"- 9/21 Interior almost finished

Post by 72stepside »

Well it's time to get the project update topic going for my truck. It is a 71 F-250, 390 cid, ps, pb, AC. I 'won' it on ebay back in July. Pulled it back to Florida from Missouri with my father's 1/2 ton Chevy. We didn't set the road on fire but got here with no 'excitement'.

I've already done a few things to it. I cleaned up the Holley 4412 to get it to run. Remember, I'm the guy who had the truck with the homemade fuel atomizer made of wire window screen.

Image

I did rig up a temporary fuel tank until I can clean out both the in cab tank and the aux tank.

Image

I just finished up the front brakes this weekend. They had locked up to the point to where I could hardly pull the truck around with a chain. Now it stops really nice. The back brakes are the next project.
Image

My plans for this truck is a complete tear down. I plan to rebuild everything that needs it and to clean up everything. The body will certainly come off as the support bushings are shot and one of the front cab mounts has rust holes in it. All the suspension bushings will be replaced as this thing handles like a king sized waterbed. You can dribble the front of the truck like a basketball cause the current shocks are only for decoration.

The is a need for body work on the lower half of the truck. The Missouri salts did a number on it. The top half is fine. Only a little surface rust is there. The passenger door has rust holes on the outside AND INSIDE. Never seen that before. Of course somebody felt compelled to cut holes in the doors for speakers.

The interior is really quite nasty. I'll strip it all out for a good pressure washing and painting later on. I'll put in a newer model bench seat. I have the buckets (Crown Vic seats) in my F100 but it only seats 2. My family is 3 large.

Image

All indications now are that the engine is in pretty good shape. Once the clip is off, I'll pull the heads to see what the wear looks like. I haven't decided on a complete bore and rebuild yet. It doesn't smoke at all now. The C-6 shifts pretty good now that I poured a quart and a half of Type F in it. I'll replace all fluids front to back.

My goal is to make this truck as new as funds will allow. I want it to be my daily driver, at least in the summer once the AC gets straightened out. It's awfully hot here in Florida. Fortunately I have collected a few parts trucks along the way. The doors off the blue one are already earmarked for the 250.
Image

Stay tuned!! I'll try to post as much as possible. There will be plenty of pics so that I don't forget what goes where!

Oh, and if you're wondering about the name... It was that or Lurch. Uncle Fester fits me much better. :P

Uncle Fester was my favorite Addams Family character!
Thanks for posting that pic of the disc brake caliper! I saved it for reference when I do mine.

Well, first one thing and then the other has delayed any progress lately. Everything from free food to sick kids has taken priority. Besides, we've been in the high 90's at 5 pm lately.

Today hopefully will be the day to get started on getting the back brakes back together. I have collected all new parts including drums so I'll have some good brakes when finished.

Stay tuned for photos.

Finally, some progress. I got the passenger side all finished up last night and made good progress on the drivers side today, prior to my daughter's 2 Year Old birthday party.

Yeah, I was thinking about that myself. Maybe it would be the beginning of the Southeast MnG. I will let you know when I am back home. I am in Nigeria working right now. I would like to see some other trucks.

Let's see...

I got Fester registered, title swapped, and insured today. Only time I've ever been to the tag office and got what I went for on the first trip.
:hd:
I tried to get it insured through American Collectors (I've used them before) but they asked for pictures. The denied me due to all the rust!!!! The lady said to send in more pictures once I get the holes patched and they'd likely insure it then. They just need to be sure I wasn't insuring a daily work truck, which I completely understand. I got a good low cost policy with Progressive for now.

I got a personalize plate coming "71F 250" I was pretty surprised that was available.

Tomorrow I'm off to the junkyard in search of anything that is available. I'm looking for a carb as I am not impressed with the Holley 4412 that is on there now. As always, if I run upon some other nice parts, they'll come home with me.

I also plan to get the two front rims painted. I cleaned up the back ones and painted them with some Rustoleum rattle cans. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. I'll post up some pics when I finish up tomorrow.

We've finally got a break in the heat down here. Maybe I can get something done over the long weekend.

Stay tuned.

Junk yard trip was a bust. My favorite yard was closed due to the weekend. The other U-pull-it yard had a 67 camper special that was AWFUL. The roof was rusted around the front and sides and peeled back into the bed. There was nothing useful on this truck. It had lower rocker that was questionable, might clean up, might not. For what the yard would have charged me for it, I passed.

Found the problem with the Holley 4412. The float adjustment screw has an o-ring that was deteriorated, allowing fuel past the float valve flooding out the carb. Replaced the o-ring and called my father over to help me adjust the idle so it's idling pretty good now.

I got the front rims painted yesterday. Pics to come tomorrow.

Next step is to clean out the aux fuel tank so I can eliminate the small gas can in the engine compartment.
