Radio

Post by j41385 »

Hello all,

I have a 72 f100, and I suppose I lucked out because it has the original radio. The problem I have is that it is the AM only version of the Philco. I want to keep it original, but I would also like to be able to listen to music on the FM side. I am stuck with religous talk shows and 50 year old country.

I have searched all the junk yards locally, and searched on ebay. Nothing.

My question is this, Does anyone out there have a working Philco with AM/FM that they would sell? Or know of a place to buy them?

Thank you.

They pop up on E-bay from time to time, but not very often....and they get some pretty hefty prices when they do. I'd suggest just picking up an inexpensive in-dash AM/FM/cassette for next to nothing and swapping it out. Of course, be sure to keep your factory radio, just in case....

Funny,
There was a newer CD/AM/FM player in the hayride truck when I got it......
I keep it on AM so I can listen to 50 year old country and talk radio.
Go figure. :drive:

I suppose that's the difference between a 19 year old and a 39 year old.
I listen to Classic Rock and Modern Country. No Eminem in my 72.

I kinda like the look of having a nice alpine newer deck in my truck. I have one installed with a volvo kit.

Wish I could get that country station your talking about. Anyway, I have an extra Ford am/fm 8 track out of a mid 70's car. The radio worked a year ago, can't vouch for the tape player. They're a tight fit but will physically fit in a 67-72 dash. Would require a custom face plate. Someone on the FTE site said a 73-79 face plate can be made to work but I don't see how. I think it be easier to make one with a sheet metal brake. I doubt you'd be interested, but figured I'd offer.

I have a Quadrasonic ford deck from the same era i might get restored someday as sort of a novelty thing.

I think the am/fm ford radios go for around $150, at least when I was wanting one they were.

Someone on ebay sold a '79 am/fm radio that will fit into the stock bezel of 67-72 f-series. It almost looks stock. I read the part number as '78. I saw one last week and it sold for less than $40. Photos of the radio are attached. I have considered building a console and mounting a radio with speakers in the assembly in place of the headliner. Anyone do anything like that?

Hmmm....I wasn't aware the '73-up radios would fit. The AM/FM version of those come through there a lot more often, so if you were after a factory look, that would definitely be the way to go.

I will most assuredly look into that. As long as it looks like the one pictured on this site. (That's how much I trust this site!)

The person who posted the radio was quite clear. His experience was only this particular radio ('79) would fit. I learned the hard way, as I bought a later 70's am/fm that did not fit. :( If I remember correctly, he said the radio control knob pedestrals had to be shimmed a bit, but that it would all fit. Picture 1 shows the "finished" assembly.

That's why I have learned to be more patient, and more picky as for what I want. I learned that by settling for a V8 when I wanted a 300 inline 6. That problem is solved now. Now I will wait as long as need be to find the 1971-72 AM/FM radio. I hope one turns up.

Check out eBay Item 7954245539, 78-79 Bronco am/fm radio. This radio looks like the "near" fit. Please understand that my comments are related from another. :hmm: I also believe in waiting for the right person, thing or item that I've looking for, but sometimes it's good to experiment a little if you can afford the cost. :$$:

Are you still waiting for the right person, or experimenting a little? How about the cost.  Sorry, I couldn't resist that one.
