68 CS Project: update 4/16/09

It was a great spring day here in the Pacific Northwest...

I had a productive evening...

Got the manual choke fixed...
Replaced the broken part, now it works like a champ...

I finally got the turn signal wiring all figured out...
All the exterior lights are working like they should except the two front side markers and the roof markers...
Right now, I have the roof markers disconnected because of a couple of bad sockets...
NPD has the matching replacements for $59 plus the ride...

Here's what's left to do in phaze one
Fix instrument panel lights... not sure why the quit workin'
Bleed and adjust brakes... brake pedal engagement adjustment???
Have exhaust pipes welded...
Clean, paint and install driver's side battery support
Install 2 marine battery boxes (lower priority)

The funny thing is that even though I keep adding stuff to the list as I go, it is still getting smaller...
I am hoping to finish everything left in Phaze 1 that I can do this weekend
I'm gonna haveta wait until next payday to take it to the muffler shop.

Soon, I'll be moving on to Phaze 2... I am starting to put together a new list...

It was a gorgious day in the great Pacific Northwest...
A perfect day to work on the CS... mid 70's with a slight breeze and not a cloud in the sky...
Today, I took care of a lot of little loose ends...
I got the NOS license plate plate light installed...
Got the spot light hooked up... it works great.
I also got front d.side fender marker light tied into the front parking light circuit.
The big project was installing the new turnsignal switch and getting new steering wheel installed.

I love the new steering wheel it is just the right size and dish, however,
I am going to have to pull it back off.
Looking at the last pic, it is easy to see why, I got the wrong installation kit.
I can't really fault Summit Racing.
I ordered the one that I was told was the right one by Shuck's Auto Parts.
I am gonna call them on Monday and see what's up... and see I can get the right one sent...
that's the one thing I really don't like about internet shopping...

As of now, the CS, is completely legal... all of the lights work...
The only thing not working is the horn so I guess it's still not 100% legal...
I'll have to figure that one out...

my suggestion is to start at the horn and work your way back checking wiring and relays and all other little parts that may not be quite right

Hey Guys,

I got what looks to be the right Grant installation and horn kit from Summit Racing today...
I'll take some pics of the install (probably this weekend if it isn't raining)
Right now it isn't raining, but it looks like it could bust loose any second.
I have been watching a couple of horn relays on ebay both NOS...
right now, they're running about $20 with delivery..
I got a new one at Shuck's yesterday for $7.32...

Horn relays are going for $20 on ebay? You can get one for like $12 from NPD, or $15 from Carpenter. Of course, you have to pay for delivery, but if you're already ordering other stuff, it doesn't make any difference.

That's about what the ones are on ebay are going for ($12 & $15 plus shipping).

Like I said...
I picked one up at Shuck's yesterday for $7.32 which included 9% sales tax.... no shipping... no wait...
Plus, it puts about $12.68 back in my pocket... gotta say I like that.
Heck, that'll buy me about 30 miles worth of gas in the truck...

Looking good kaptn! You're really going to town on the 68! I just picked up my grant steering wheel and installation kit too. How hard was it to get the old wheel off?

With a wheel puller they pop off pretty easy.

Hey BiggDogg...

If it is the stock style wheel, alot of times you can just wiggle 'em off...
be careful, if it come loose, it will come all at once and can smack ya up side the head if yer not careful...
Much easier and safer to us a puller...
You can get a nice set at Harbor Freight for under $20...

I got the replacemeny hub from Summit Racing today here's pics of the installation...

Everything installed and working... even the horn circuit...yes !!!

I'm alot happier with this hub set... yes !!! It was the correct one...
Everything went together really smooth and easy.
Like the caption on the pic said even the horn circuit works...
I replaced the horn relay, but the horns themselves don't work...
I got one from the bus... it worked fine so I'm gonna put a post in the parts wanted section...
