Looks like good progress to me! Taking off parts that have been together for 40+ years don't usually come off to well anyway. I think your doing it right. If you have the parts off, you might as well clean them and prep them right.

Well I hope I don’t regret using 10 year old POR15...

Everything is black though (well I still have to do the calipers and rotors but...)...

Tomorrow we paint shock absorbers... Edit, too wet to actually paint... :( Will paint tomorrow if the weather improves, but it might not until next week...

Not much done yesterday...

Shocks painted and installed, spring retainers (at the top) painted and installed... king pin bores almost ready for king pins.

Perhaps hanging spindles this evening if weather permits (it is outside)

POR15 blackkote and chassis black turned out close to the same color, hard to tell them apart... not sure why as this hasn’t been the case in the past.

VHT Epoxy gloss black on the shock didn’t turn out that glossy... possibly too humid but it will do...

Rotors and calipers stilll have to be painted, still undecided on the caliper color, will be black or gold...

Sorry man I sort of missed this,

Thank you, I do figure that if it is worth doing it is worth doing right! It is just very time consuming... :D

We do seem to be on a similar path!

My bride is planning to go on a trip next week so I will probably spend most of the weekend with her and resume truck work next week. Perhaps I will get the rotors cleaned, taped and painted this weekend but I make no promises.

Still have to put cotter pins in the steering, set the toe and put the clamp bolts in. I won’t final torque the suspension until it is on the ground (or ramps at least)...

OK so I did have some time this morning and got a little done.

My tape job leaves a quite a bit to be desired and I will have to clean up after myself and probably do a little touch up after final assembly.

Image

Not really thrilled with the Wagner rotors, they are not machined the same and the studs are not the same either. I’ll be sending NPD a note about this.

Sat the caliper in place to get a visual...

Image

Next up is painting calipers and building them...

Pretty sure gold is going to be the choice...

Thought for the day...

Can I hide the adjustable valve on the frame near the junction in the lines to the rear brakes... :?

I believe I can, that is the next thing after the calipers are built and back on.

Calipers are painted, drying now. Not completely thrilled, the gold was old and very obviously separated when I opened it. I throughly mixed it but it did not go on as well as I had hoped. I its leveling as it drys so I think it will be passible. I used silver POR under the gold.

Also did the new master, black POR under BlackCote on it.

Pardon the mess... It has been like that for weeks, looking forward to cleaning up once this stage of the project is done... :help:

Well while that dries I believe I will get the Harley out... Talk to y’all later...

A wise man once said these words:

"Wouldn’t hurt my feelings if we accidentally got a glimpse of that Mach either.... "

Substitute 'Harley' for 'Mach'

So...how about it?

Well strictly in the interest of things to do while paint dries, other than actually watch paint dry...

You did sort of catch a glimpse of one of them, but as my bride is out of town visiting a friend, I rode hers....

Here is a better shot of the other one.

Thanks for the pics! It is always fun to see what toys guys have in their toy box. I don't know, but I suspect a number of guys on this forum cross over into the Harley world from time to time.

Going for a Fall ride sure beats watching paint dry!

Robert, have you watched any of the 1320 videos from this years event? Seems like a fun time if you're not too serious about it and build something reliable.

You’re welcome of course, it is not nearly as impressive as the Mach

I bet you are right on the Harleys... :D

The Softail will probably pass the sportster in mileage soon... I’ve sorta been having a Ducati or KTM bug lately, but man I do love that Softail even with the accommodations for Mrs DuckRyder (lowered and seat).

Of Power Tour? I will have to check them out, I watched a lot of random videos...

I’ll spend less time in the vendor displays and more time in the parking lot looking at what people brought if I do make it this coming year.

So:

The pads are Wagner TQ, I really haven’t had great luck with these on other stuff and I detest the silver/gray paint.

So this happened:

And the right side is together:

Image

Few things:

This is one of the more frustrating caliper rebuilds I have done and I was a Steering, Alignment and Brake guy in a former life, so I’ve done a few. That dust boot was not one of Ford/Bendix’s better ideas.

I’m not at all sure about the brake line, but that is the only way it will go on... :?

I conspicuously missed a spot on the caliper, have to try to touch that up later today... Well better get back at it...
