I agree. so FE is the way to go.

Not true. The 390 has a 3.78 stroke. The 460 has a 3.87 stroke. FE's have gobs of low end anyway...

I have a question about which engine to go with on my 1972 F100 4x4 SWB. I was hoping that some of you might be able to offer me your advice and expertise in the matter of deciding what engine to go with in my new project.

Currently, I have a working 360 with a four speed in my 72 4x4. I have a 72 donor truck with a 360 hocked to a 3 speed automatic and I also have a 79 donor truck with a 460 hooked to an automatic too.

My original thought was to take the donor 360 and rebuilding it into a 390 stroker and drop in my 72 4x4. I was then thinking that "There is no replacement for displacement." Maybe I should drop the 460 form my 79 in the 72 4x4.

Which ever engine I drop into my 72 4x4 I want to do a mild performance build. Maybe 400 hp. but I want torque more than the HP.

Anyway, what does the forum have to say about my two options? Things I have to consider, budget, ease of installation, keeping the 4 speed. Proper application for a 4x4. & etc.

Your advice is appreciated.

Yours,
You can get 430hp and 500+ ft. lb. of torque out of a 460 easy. Thats what Im currently building.

Thanks OldRedFord,

I really like the idea of working on a 460, but I'm going to stick with the old FE for this project. I've been doing a lot of reading on the 460 and it would be awesome stroker. Maybe I'll hang on to it and use it in a future project.

I would really like to here how your 460 turns out. Please let us know and share some photos too if you have a chance.

sideoilerfe, thanks for all your advice and help. I'm not sure now of going 390 or 410, but my budget will probably steer me to the 390. That is still a respectful engine, but the 410 sure sounds good.

I appreciate the advice on the headers. I do like them and have a set on Hookers on my Bronco and have not had any problems at all.

Yours,
