How fast do you think someone who has never torn one apart (and doesnt know anything about how they work at all) can rebuild one? The truck is my daily driver so it would need to be a fairly quick thing although that WOULD be a great excuse to drive the race truck for a solid week.

Rebuilding mine would save me the time of cleaning up and painting another transmission but rebuilding it might take a while. Either way, my engine and transmission need to come out. Engine's rear main is leaking. Transmission chattering. Might as well swap a np205 in while i'm at it. Then might as well get my hands on the d44 HP i've always wanted...
A couple of days taking your time and checking everything. But I think you would likely have everything done in a couple of hours knowing how fast you always work.

Might I suggest finding a used NP 435, either 2wd or 4wd that needs rebuilt and doing it in the garage while the truck is in service. Then when you have a day, you could put the existing trans, swap any parts you need to, and then reinstall the rebuilt trans with less down time.

BTW, I just watched your other driving vid. I think your trans fix is more dire then I first realized. Especially if you plan on towing.

Thanks for the info

I don't usually keep it rev'd as high as i did in 3rd, i kept in in 3rd and gassed it up the steepest hill around to make sure the noise was obvious. But still, when towing 8,000 pounds up that hill in 3rd the tranny sounded like it was going to explode.

I guess i better move this up to top priority! I plan on towing the race truck 300 miles at the end of may.

You should be able to rebuild it in a weekend fairly easily. The last one I did only took the better part of a day and part of that was for drinking beer. And I agree with Fireguywtc...find a spare trans to rebuild. It'll make your life easier.

You need to plan a road trip... I'll load you up... 4x4 bump 435's.... divorced 205.....

It's bearings.

They are a straightforward rebuild, no big mysteries. You could fix it in a day if your fast and mechanically inclined. You must have a press, bearing splitters, puller, welder.

Cleaning up the old crap takes longer than anything else in most tranny builds. The 435 being so simple to set clearances on makes cleaning about the only obstacle to deal with. Got a tranny shop or engine machine shop near you? Pay them to run your parts and it'll make your job much easier.
