Small Block and Big Block. Refers to the general size of the engine block casting.

I don't know I've seen some big displacement and hp number out of a small block. Here's a motor if I had the $$$ would be going in my 70 http://www.worldcastings.com/products/m ... gines.html1970f100x wrote:BIg blocks are the best. Hello cmon now.

Re: Which is better?
Why did they offer V6s latter?......To sell more trucks. If you have 1 engine and you put it in every car/truck you make then that engine will be cheeper to put in. so you sell it for less. the cheeper the truck is, the more you sell.1970f100x wrote:why did ford offer a 302 in the trucks then?sideoilerfe wrote:Then stick with it. If you switch to a 302, then you have to swap transmissions or bell housing/ clutch too. If it's an auto you'll have to change the drive line length as well due to tail shafts being different lengths. 360's are work horses like 300 6's. Low rpm engines. The 390 is also a workhorse with more performance possibilities.

for simplicity, ease of maintenance, and working on,the 6-cyl 300 is easiest, its all what your doing with it.

Re: Which is better?
I currently have (and had) FEs in Edsels, Galaxies and Merc Parklanes. They all run great but I never could get good fuel mileage for DAILY driving. ($30+ fill up to drive to a parade or show then come home on an empty tank and park it for another 6 months is OK but not $60+ a week)
I have a rebuilt 1966 Merc 390 in my 1966 F-350 Holmes 400 tow truck. It replaced a unknown size FE with a dead hole that pumped oil. The new engine did not RUN any better than the old one, it just stoped using oil at 1 qt every 150 miles. (FEs are durable)
Both motors tugged great and never overheated, but I carry a 5 gal gas can whenever I make long distance tow runs. (all personal tows, I am not in the business)
I am thrilled to have my 1969 F-100 302!
I dont tow or haul heavy with it, it is an in town 'Home Depot' cruiser that makes some freeway trips of ~200 miles occasionally. (never hauling heavy)
I wanted smooth and economical and I got it. (I woulda been happy with a 300 six)
My 69 is replacing a 1964 F-100 with a 292 and T-85 overdrive. The 64 was a good truck but parts for a Y-block? They are really geting obsolete!
