Re: My 72 Crew F-350 Cummins Tow Rig Project
Just picked up a Dana 70 SRW out of a 77 F350 Super Cab for a $100. It has 4.10s and the power-lock. I would like to have an Dana 80 but every one I find ether turns out to be a 70 or a DRW. Besides can't pass up a 70 w/power-lock for a $100

Re: My 72 Crew F-350 Cummins Tow Rig Project
The Ford 70 isn't much less of an axle than the dodge 80. Put a ford 80 next to a dodge 80, it'll be clear chrysler cut some corners to say thier pickups have an "80".

Re: My 72 Crew F-350 Cummins Tow Rig Project
So what would you suggest? Just keep and use the ford 70 or find a ford 80 and have it shortend to a SRW?averagef250 wrote:The Ford 70 isn't much less of an axle than the dodge 80. Put a ford 80 next to a dodge 80, it'll be clear chrysler cut some corners to say thier pickups have an "80".

Re: My 72 Crew F-350 Cummins Tow Rig Project
The axle you have will work great. The Ford 70B's are pretty solid units. I'd upgrade it to 1410 or larger U-joints though.
What are you planning for the engine? Stock you'd be fine with the 16 spline 60 setup right and an easy foot. If you're going to upgrade that industrial motor quite a bit and plan to do doughnuts on asphalt with 4K on the bed your going to have rear end issues.

Re: My 72 Crew F-350 Cummins Tow Rig Project
Finally got some real progress done!
Got it inside finally to work on it.
Cut the old front hanger off and fabed a new one to fit the super duty springs.
Cut the old crossmember out to build a new one for the engine.
And put the Dana 70 under with the 35" Dick Cepeks

Lookin great man !! Its going to be boss when you get finished.
The way I understand it, being a Dodge man as well as a Ford man, The DANA 80 Hybird Chrysler uses is a 80 pumpkin with 70 tubes.
I think the 70 you got for $100 buck will be plenty.

Re: My 72 Crew F-350 Cummins Tow Rig Project
What size are those urathane bushings you're using for mounts and where'd you get them? I'm curious how they'll work with a rattle box. If you need the low fan idler mount to make your fan line up with the radiator let me know. I probably have a few spares.

Re: My 72 Crew F-350 Cummins Tow Rig Project
WOW! it has been a year since I posted on my build. Things have been real slow for me, lost my job due to work slow. So I went back to school, hoping to be done with school this fall. Then I can get back to making real money again. I do have the 60 under the front, just need to finish putting the 60 back together

Re: My 72 Crew F-350 Cummins Tow Rig Project
Hello,
I'm new on here and hoping you may let me pick your brain...
I'm and getting ready to start my first bump side build. (I've had plenty of dent sides and other body styles...) And it seems you have already been down the path I'm starting.
I have a '72 F350 dually. I want to drop a 1st gen cummins in and make it a 4wd. I have been piecing parts together and have the a cummins, nv4500, t-case and dana 60 front end.
I guess what my biggest question is, did you have to do a body lift? Was there any other mods you had to do? (motor and cross member are a given) and what you learned from the experience that you would pass on?
Thanks,
Shane
