Door Lock Repair

Post by Gray035 »

Out of the blue the lock on my driver's door stopped staying up in the un-locked position. The culprit was a small spring that broke on the door latch. I also discovered that door latches are no longer reproduced and increasingly hard to find at the junkyard. I was able to repair my latch by replacing the spring that holds the lock mechanism in place.

The door latch:

The spring I replaced:

The springs I bought off Amazon to do it:

The trickiest part is getting the spring to fit. It has to be unwound so that there is only one or two coils and then the ends have to be trimmed and bent. To uncoil it I put the spring around a bolt and put it in the vise with the coils I wanted to remove sticking up. Then uncoil and straighten. Bend the two ends so they can be retained in the holes and put the spring in the latch.

There are probably better springs out there, but the only ones that I could find that were a closer size to the original spring had minimum purchase requirements. I don't need 100 springs for $50. Hopefully this helps some of you.
