1970 F100 Speedo Cable Gear Needed (C6)

Post by Iant62 »

Hi Everyone,
I wonder if anyone can help.
On my 1970 F100, I recently had the transmission (3 speed auto C6) replaced by my local shop. At the time we decided to get the speedometer working again. It word for a mile and then stopped. I am told by them that I need a gear - 01T-17271-B19. It's is evidently a steel gear, 19 tooth and fits on the passenger (right side) cable.
They have tried LMC but evidently got the wrong part.
Could anyone point me in the direction of where I could find this part? The truck has been at the shop for nearly 4 months now, and I want to get it back up and running and they don't seem to be too motivated to find the part.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Your mechanic has done a poor job of explaining what you need, hopefully this will help. There is a drive gear, and a driven gear, the drive gear is metal and part of the output shaft, unless it was damaged during the rebuild, it should not wear out. The driven gear is plastic, it is attached to the cable and commonly wears out, it is on the left side, there is no right cable. The part number is incomplete, it should probably start with the letter D, and would be the driven gear, So look for a 19 tooth driven gear from your favorite web site, or parts vendor.

Thank you for that. I will head over there tomorrow and talk to him and see if I can get this clarified.

Go to the homepage for this site and click on part numbers, toward the bottom is a bunch of speedo gears. Sadly, they only show numbers for manuals, but I think the driven gear is the same, only the drive gear is wrong for your automatic.

What Frazier Said, +

Take a look here.

http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... &start=135

start at page 10 and go to 11

IIRC there are two different drive gears for a C6 verify you have the correct one, if not you may need to adjust the proper driven gear. I beige the 428CobraJet registry has a calculator.

Hi again,
I finally got some more information from my shop. Evidently what I am looking for is a steel (or some kind of metal) driven gear. The part that the cable attaches to has broken off, and the gears are kind of worn. I have attached a couple of pictures. Can anyone point me to where I might find one - new or used? Thanks?

I did not think any C6 had a metal driven gear.

Are you positive you have a C6?

Is there any possibility your truck was not originally an automatic?

You might try Jay @ Broader Performance, but i think something is up here.

/also try greens sales, but i'm convinced that is a manual transmission gear. Do a google search for images using "speedometer drive gear for t98".

I don't know what that is, but it's clearly worn out. Here is a driven gear from a '77 F150 C6, 18 teeth, gray plastic, background is 1/4 inch squares. The drive gear is part of a long output shaft.

Also, here is a page from the '73 MPC which shows the parts, the $ symbol means the drive gear is part of the output shaft, see bottom corner.

Are you sure you don't have the older cruise o matic?

Thanks guys. I am going to head over to the shop tomorrow. The transmission is a new (overhauled) C6 they just put in. I am at a loss as to why this is different from others.
I will get the data plate info tomorrow, too.
