Aircraft cleaner. Whats next?
Hi all
I've been removing the layers on my truck with aircraft cleaner and a metal scraper. I will clean it with soap and water and remove any surface rust with angle grinder and wire brush on a drill maybe. I got a rust paint remover pad for the grinder.
I'm gonna do the cab and bed separately.
I can mostly get it down to metal or the original brown primer.
Whats next?
Skin it in bondo and glazing putty? Begin the shaping and actual metal work?
Thank you all.

It’s a matter of preference really.
The only bondo I would use would be on the body panel dents. And I’d definately skip the Por15. I’m still scraping that stuff out on various parts of my truck

Once I strip something to bare metal . I put it in epoxy primer first. It seals the metal up really nice. You won't have to worry about surface rust. Then I do body work. You can grind your spots down to bare metal and work them or if you are using quality stuff you can just sand down the primer and do your body work. I like the epoxy it keeps the rust from coming back. Epoxy is also water proof . After the body work is done if there is a lot of metal showing ( there usually is) I put a coat of epoxy and then primer surfacer.

Re: Aircraft cleaner. Whats next?
Ok so your both saying just wash it down when I think its ready and spray a good primer on it.
My co worker mentioned por30 or pro40...
Truck will be a light yellow Easter cream color so I should do a light grey or white im guessing. Not black.
Than after the primer stage for protection and universal color....I can start doing the body work and metal.
Am I understanding this correctly?
I'm confused by all the products.
Contours. Compounds. Epoxy. Sealers.
Primers. Lol.
From what I'm reading here from you two. I don't have to skin the whole truck in bondo. Just a good solid surface primer to start.
Guess it's time to get a gun and a new air compresser and water catcher.
Thanks guys!

Don't skin the whole thing .that is for show cars and not for your first time body man. It seems like it should be a simple thing but It can be confusing at first. I've been doing paint and body over 20 years for a living. If you have more questions just ask

Get some metal and concrete etch from the hardware store it's alot cheaper than the paint store. This stuff will neutralize the rust you can't see. Strip the paint and rust then spray the metal etch on let it sit a few minutes ( out of direct sunlight) then hose it off with water then dry with compressed air. Now you're ready for the epoxy primer. The epoxy is good if you have to leave it outside

If you never have done bodywork before , I'd suggest practicing on something smaller .
if you work on a panel and repair and paint it , you'll learn what works and what doesn't
I've seen people get overwhelmed discouraged and quit their dream project , or waste money redoing things.

I'm using a red oxide sealer from ace hardware.
Etch from lowes. Next I will use body filler and last a primer
