New here, overwhelmed with my new truck

Post by Old+Blue »

Hi everyone!
I’m new here. New to Ford trucks. New to old vehicles. And old.
My wife and I found a 67 F100 online and bought it sight unseen.
We were told it was a “solid old truck with a small rear main leak”.
We had it trucked here. She’s a beauty. But that leak....
We took it to the local “Ford guy” (we live fairly remotely in a small town in the mountains). He said it was far too gone for him, and suggested we send it to Jasper for a rebuild. We did. That was November. Still at Jasper.
What to do? Look for a new truck and sell this one when it’s finally back on the road? Look for a replacement replacement engine then swap again when Jasper comes through?
Any thoughts much appreciated.

What engine?

What Mountains?

Will Jasper send it back?

Western NC. Good question, could be worth asking. Jasper says these “authentic “ engines can be “junked out internally “ and take a while to find parts.

Congrats on your new project, and welcome from Pennsylvania! How is the truck rust-wise? If it is pretty solid maybe you should keep it and run the new engine once it gets back from Jasper. Finding another rust-free truck is pretty hard, depending on were you live.

It's pretty rust free! It's not the original color, and some of the panels are misaligned. It's got non-original wheels, which are on spacers, which I don't think is the best idea, but they look good :)

"When a man with money meets a man with experience, the man with experience gets the money and the man who had the money gets experience." Did the Jasper guy lay hands on your truck? Did he pull the engine? 352"s are a desireable engine but can get very messy over time and cleanup can be time consuming if he figures that is the reason it may be too far gone. If it's in as good as shape as you mention then I would retrieve it immediately, pay him for his "work" and find another shop before parts start disappearing off of it. These are great trucks, the first new '67 I saw when I was 16. I own 4 now and one is a '67 Mercury M100, factory power steering and power brakes. Hang onto your project, find a decent shop if you are unable to do the work yourself, keep in touch with all of us on here and post pics if you are able. :fr:

The local guy did pull the engine in November and send it off to Jasper, and yes he did say he could do the work but it would be cheaper to send it away.
Made sense to me...I just didn't realize it could be gone soooo long.
Thanks for the advice.

Be advised that I'm pretty sure all the FE engine series have the 352 stamped on them, (352/360/390).
It will come together I'm sure but be ready to learn many repairs, (or you could easily sink a fortune into the truck). There's a lot of really good experienced truck guys here to learn from, (for free).

Here's the engine ID tutorial.

Listen to FastEdsel and BasketCase. Keep that 67 and enjoy the ride. I found mine in 2009, got it road-worthy, and loved it along. The rear seal leaks like a sieve. The body has about 40 dents and a little rust. But, a new carburetor, brake job, and plain old driving have made it a dependable friend. I could spend $15k on it, easy, and someday I may, but I enjoy it just the way it is. And the 67 is unique, as you will find on this great site.

Keep the truck.

And welcome to the family!

Did we miss the pictures of the truck.

Boy, theres a lot to hit on here, you've gotten some good replies.

Jasper seems to go through phases, sometimes good and sometimes not so good... I assume they had no core engine and took yours to build? Is it supposed to be a stock rebuild?

Without getting too crazy technical, a 352 is a Ford FE engine, the 360 and 390 (and others) are also FE engines.

Unless upmost originality is your goal, i would probably look at securing a 360 or 390 and building it, in anycase i would try to get my engine back form Jasper if they can't deliver and then head over to the FE Forum http://fepower.net/simplemachinesforum/ ... ?board=2.0 and hit them up for some recommendations for a builder. Ross (our own bad427stang) and brent come immediately to mind, i expect they could build you a nice sorta stock 352, 360 or 390. They might even have a core to build. It'll probably cost more than Jasper, though last i looked at any of Jaspers prices they were certainly not cheap.

All this is excellent! Thank y’all. And just hours ago...we got word that the rebuilt engine is being delivered Monday. Yippe! And for a very reasonable price. We’ll be driving her soon....
