70 f100 restoration-carb issues

Post by Sandk342 »

hey guys, my first time asking for help on this forum so please cut me a little slack if I do something wrong:). I had my 302 rebuilt a few yrs ago and couldn't get it to run just right ever since. Good compression and good fire. Bought what was supposed to be a new 1403 Edelbrock from eBay to put on it. (Stock cast iron intake) it acts like it has asthma or some thing. It will run but to get rpms up, I have to pump the throttle and it has NO power. Think the carb was used a little cause the box looked like its been worn on the inside with a little grease. Any idea as to what the issue could be? To me, it acts like a bad accelerator pump diaphragm but these carbs don't really have one?

I’d put a good rebuilt Ford 2100 carb on it.
Dont know much about Edelbrocks but do hear stories of people having trouble with them.

Edelbrock experts ?

What is your ignition system like?
Had the very same symptoms on my like truck and engine and my distributor was not advancing. Just FWIW.

First I had the stock distributor with points and had the same thought so I bought a new one (w/ points) and no change. Then I bought a Pertronix and put it in with the same result.

does it idle good?

Maybe a vacuum leak?
do you have spacer plates under the carb ?, I've seen where the wrong gasket doesn't seal properly.
