carb rebuild
My Autolite 2100 carb has a lot of play in the butterfly shaft that runs thru the lower portion of the body - is this fixable or do i need a replacement carb ?this is on a 1969 f100 fe390 - 3 spd .the truck runs good bus gas seeps from this shaft and smells up the garage .

Yes. This is a common problem with manual transmission carbs... because the butterfly is operated with each shift, the manual transmission carburetors have the problem of wearing out much faster than do the automatic transmission carbs.
For rare carbs with this issue the solution is to get the butterfly shaft out of the body, then build up the shaft by addition welding if it's worn (it usually is). Then it can be ground back down. But before grinding down the shaft, the machinist will put bushings in the body where the shaft goes. Then he grinds to allowable tolerances. The final clearance should be such that the shaft is snug in the body once again, but not dragging or binding in any way.
Carb shops often do this. It costs, but it can rescue an otherwise junk carburetor. Good luck and let us know what you do.
