Got sort of an odd question for you guys. I have a T18 out of my 72 F250 on the bench. It definitely isn’t original to the truck, I’ve known that for a while.
The stamped metal tag on the top cover has this part number: D4T3-AAA 2. This means it’s a 1974 Ford part judging by the D4, right? But the weird thing is that reverse is over and down, and there are three separate shift forks in the top cover (ie it shifts reverse directly). It's not unusual for a D4T3 part number to be used across multiple years. That just means it began in '74. It could be unchanged up into the 80s and it would still have the same part number.

Seems odd that Ford would keep the same part number despite such a fairly significant change. The top cover and even the casting for the case changed with the different reverse shifting method.

I believe Novak's shift pattern information is incorrect--I have also noticed that on their site before. The T18 reverse over & up/down change happened long before 1979. I have been told that it changed in approximately 1973 which might explain your 1974 part number. I do have an original 1976 F100 with a T18 and reverse is over & down.

That makes a lot of sense. Just need to make sure I get the correct rebuild kit.
