that's a open ended question, how long will a 40 yr old transmission last? The c6 is a fairly stout transmission by design, but use,driving style,maintenance all factor in to a units lifespan. is this something your rebuilding?

I know the C6 in my truck, which was in it when I purchased it, has lasted me almost 24 years so far. I've changed the fluid and filter 2 times and changed the rear output seal once. I've driven over 100,000 miles on the transmission, in fact, it has well outlasted the motor that was in the truck when I bought it. I also had an 88 f250 HD with a C6 that had 210,000 miles on the clock when I sold it. I saw the truck around town for 5 or 6 years after I sold it too. Only serviced it once in all those miles. Can't give you any definitive answer how long they'll last but, with maintenance, it's a long time.

If you treat it right, keep it in good maintenance, and don't insist on doing brake stands everyday, it should last a good long time. My uncles 70 f250 c/s has a C6 with roughly 200k on it. its not perfect, but it does keep the truck moving forward and backward.

It is anybody's guess how long a C6 will last. Based on my experience with "junk" Ford transmissions (A4LDs) which have lasted me over 400,000 miles without rebuilding, I would say your C6, if properly driven and taken care of, could or maybe even should last even longer.

I worked at a transmission shop in the early 90's and have seen them fail as far as 300,000 miles and as low as 45,000 miles.....it all comes down to how you take care of them and what you use them for. Don't keep the maintenance up and abuse it and it will more than likely have a short life........do keep them serviced and don't beat on them or overload your truck hauling and it should give you a good lifespan........and ALWAYS make sure you run a transmission cooler......heat is a transmissions worst enemy........
