Afaik these trucks all came with single row sealed roller bearings . The 9-3/8" axle 3600# had 31 spline bigger axle with sealed double row bearings, now $$$ obsolete. The A20 came in 77-79 lincoln disc rears and later. Most 77 and up everything with new pattern rear even with drums.

Well I got some cleaning done, will endeavor to paint the housing and backing plates during the week if it stays warm enough.



What we are working on.



Obviously someone was painting on the chunk, from what I recall they are supposed to be basically the color of red oxide primer. Also runs in the black. Looks like it had some grease pen markings at some point,



Gear number, Marked FoMoCo USA D2AW 4210 B triangle 2 (this should be a 3.50 gear.)



I think I got an apprentice welder for 2 of the welds, 2 of the other ones are very nice. I suppose it could be a repair but the filth was evenly distributed.









Cleaned up.



Chunk cleaned up, I dried everything and coated the gears and bearings with WD40 to stop flash rusting.

Guess I have to go count teeth on the ring and pinion. I’m going to be pissed if it isn’t a 3.50:1 (unless it is a 3.70 or 3.90)...

I count 12 pinion / 39 ring so that makes it 3.25:1 If I am not mistaken. Guess this explains why it had been out, someone before me changed it from 3.50:1 to 3.25:1.

I’m displeased about this and trying to talk myself out of ordering a 3.70:1 or 3.89:1 gear.

Got a little done today.





I know it is too glossy and the oil slinger is not supposed to be painted, but it is not a K-Code Mustang so I did not worry a lot about it. Since this is going to be a driver I actually plan to coat everything with a waxy coating when it is all finished.

The Axle bearings were supposed to arrive today, but did not.

I think I am going to try the present gear.

Personally I think you'll not notice the 3.25's as far as performance goes and you'll love them for longer drives. Heck, if you pack two sets of wheels and tires, one tall for the road and one short for the track you'll have the best of both worlds. Figure the tire height difference from 3.00 to 3.25 to 3.50 to 4.11 and go from there. Probably a 31" for the road and 24-26" for the track. You'll want the track tire short since they grow with speed. Figure out what will hold the torque off the line (another benefit of the 3.25's) and go with it.

Wheels and tires are probably cheaper than an OD unit.

I think you are right, the current tires are about 28” so I will probably be happier with the 3.25 on this little jaunt... I can rethink it with a tire change later.

Looking good gonna have to be careful not to scratch that 9 chunk here. So what is the plan on it just swapping in the tru trac? and freshen up?

Yeah man, it looks better in pictures than in person, but I figured it might get some um character working on it...

Yep, I’m figuring just swap the bearings and tru track, at least to me the gear looks to be in good shape. I can try to take some pictures if you like, I guess if we get into it and need something I can run down to Summit...

Sounds good no issue on that all new bearings and such is not a problem It's a 28 spline and such?

Yep it is a 28 spline. Bronco graveyard assured me we had the correct bearings for the tru trac.
